The truth behind racial disparities in fatal police shootings

New research from Michigan State University and University of Maryland reveals findings that flip many of these reports on their heads – white police officers are not more likely to have shot minority citizens than non-white officers.
quote:
“We found that the race of the officer doesn’t matter when it comes to predicting whether black or white citizens are shot," Cesario said. "If anything, black citizens are more likely to have been shot by black officers, but this is because black officers are drawn from the same population that they police. So, the more black citizens there are in a community, the more black police officers there are.”
quote:
“Many people ask whether black or white citizens are more likely to be shot and why. We found that violent crime rates are the driving force behind fatal shootings,” Cesario said. “Our data show that the rate of crime by each racial group correlates with the likelihood of citizens from that racial group being shot. If you live in a county that has a lot of white people committing crimes, white people are more likely to be shot. If you live in a county that has a lot of black people committing crimes, black people are more likely to be shot. It is the best predictor we have of fatal police shootings.”

How very racist of you to even suggest this!!!!!!!

Doesn't matter. People on one side of the fence will never look at facts. And will never believe them.

Does everyone not know this already?

99% of the people out there acting the arse aren't doing it because they are trying to end racism. They are doing it because they want to destroy stuff and get some more free shite.
These results are what most of us knew anyway. These findings won't hit home with the idiots rioting.

LeBron James is a world-renowned leader on race relations and he told me that African-Americans are stalked and hunted every day by the police.
I’m going to take LeBron’s word over Ell’s.

The fact is blacks and whites are harmed or even killed by cops who are not acting legally. It’s rare, but it happens. The problem is how can we identify bad good and how can we root them out?
That should be discussed, but it’s almost impossible to think every cop will be a good cop. After all not every priest is a good priest, not every doctor is an ethical doctor and not every attorney follows the law. The fact is it’s impossible to make any profession 100% pure.
Here in BR, cops are over worked and underpaid. That isn’t a good situation. We have a black mayor who hired her own black police chief. I see no real effort to improve the ranks except speeches. We need more cops, better pay to attract better candidates, and a lot less speech making and grandstanding.

Most sane people know this already.
This is just an excuse, it's not what this is really about.

The study is a year old. So at least that many.

You would think more people would be reporting on this but I guess true journalism is dead so no one will bring it up.

dont bring science into this, we only judge based on emotion.

Journalists are too busy virtue signaling by retweeting their favorite AA athletes and entertainers to be bothered by actual reporting and data.

Shocking.

A Harvard study a while back came to the same conclusion.
Facts don’t matter though when you hate your country and need an excuse to be angry and violent.

Been reading the studies I can on the subject. Unfortunately the data on which most of these studies/papers is based is fraught with problems. Turns out on a national level we have poor structures in place to report extrajudicial killings in a way conducive to these types of studies.
1. Note that the MSU study you cited flags one major issues—that the discrepancy it highlights can be explained, in part, by the fact that police officers are more likely to patrol areas of the same color. So, yes, that feature of policing makes it more likely you’ll shout someone of your own race.
2. While imperfect, Harvard’s Roland Fryer wrote a paper in 2016 In which he found that black people were not disproportionately more likely to be the victims of police shootings than white civilians—but WERE more likely to be the victims of non-lethal police force. I believe he held constant certain things like education, type of crime committed, financial well-being of the arrestee, etc.

While an interesting piece, it doesn't sell clicks nor draw viewers/readers better than the current narrative of "white cops killing blacks because racism". It will end up on the same pile of ignored data as blacks committing far more homicides than whites (thus creating more cop/black interactions), especially when juxtaposed against the total black population as a percentage of total population.
And those same people ignoring it will continue to bitch about how nothing changes.
