Had demartinos for the first time the other week. And now I’m on a mission to find the best muffuletta in the city. Please let me know your favorite spot.

Thanks.

Friend,

10. Napoleon House - the only heated muffuletta in the top 10.
9. Martin's Deli & Bistro (hate giving business to a group that exists to corrupt with alcohol, but good muff)
8. Come Back Inn (request cold)
7. Lovecchio's (long trip to Norco, but it's the best sandwich within 20 miles)
6. Frank's (not the original, but is delicious)
5. World Deli (request cold)
4. Nor Joe's (good, but isn't as great as most Old Metairites say)
3. Gendusa's (request cold)
2. DiMartino's (delivered by family)
1. Central Grocery (simply the best, by a large margin)

Best in the game. Do you get it delivered because the West Bank is scary?

Liuzza's on Bienville St. in Mid-City makes their version of a Muff called the "Frencheletta" and it is killer. It is all the regular muff ingredients on French Bread and toasted, cut into 6 equal pieces and the last time I had it, I could only eat 4 of them, but I did wash that down with 2 ice cold fishbowl mugs of Abita Amber.

Not sure about now, but there's a small neighborhood grocery store on Friscoville St. in Arabi called Arabi Food Store and at one time they were praised by local food critics for their muff. I had a few in the past but it's been years since I ate one there, but it was very good.

As for Central Grocery, I know they were the first, but I'm not impressed by theirs.

Central Grocery has been sitting on their reputation for way too long. There's lots better around town.

Friend,

If by "sitting on their reputation" means continuing to use the best sliced meats on the best seeded muffuletta loaf (Italian meats on French bread is not a muffuletta by definition), with the best olive mix, then Central Grocery is doing what you claim they are.

Just about any place that heats their "muffuletta" is using lesser quality meats. Cochon Butcher is an exception, but their sandwich does not taste anything like a real muffuletta and thus I do not include it in my top ten. It makes no sense to heat high quality Italian meats, as these meats have always been intended to be served at room temperature, as they are at Central Grocery. Sure, if you're using ACME brand, industrial salami and Papa John quality pepperoni, heating makes sense.

However, those who truly appreciate the history and real flavor of a quality muffuletta eat it at room temperature, as it was intended. Never trust the opinion of one who recommends a heated muffuletta. Never.

The two best don't even make your list. By "Central Market" I reckon you mean Central Grocery? It's a sad joke with a 1/4th of the meat they used to put on the sandwich in the 80s.

Two best?

Terranova's Superette and/or Tag's Deli (in Chalmette but a close drive)

They would have to put 6 times the amount of meat on their muff to equal out the bread bomb they serve.

DiMartino's. Ask for it chilled.

Shoot this up to #1, but order warm. Ask for olive salad on the side then apply when you get home.

Friend,

I have noticed no decrease in Central’s meat since 1990, when I had my first muffuletta there. A detail like that I would not miss. A good muffuletta is not about having a mound of meat. There are plenty of grocery stores in New Orleans that go by the more meat is better philosophy to disastrous consequences. Rouses for instance puts close to 1.5 pounds of meat on their muffulettas, but it is one of the worst in the city. Such is the cost of using a bunch of cheap ham as a substitute.

Terranova’s makes an ok muffuletta. But it too suffers from using less than the best cuts of meat. Whereas Rouses loads it with cheap ham, Terranova’s loads its muff with far too much cheap olive mix. If you want an olive sandwich, that’s one thing, but the proportions are so off that I can’t focus on the overly bitter and oily flavor long enough to give an adequate critique of the sandwich’s taste rather than its off putting proportions.

There is a golden ratio in muffulettas that Central Grocery achieves with every single one of their muffulettas. It is the true and perfect muffuletta.
