New soccer club in BR

My wife saw something on Facebook about a new club in BR for kids ages 3-19 called the Gulf Coast league that’s affiliated with the Dallas Texans. Anyone know anything about it? Tryouts at Jefferson Baptist in a few weeks. I guess it’ll compete with BRSC?

Gulf South Texans. Orlando Cervantes is the director.
I would make sure you do some research on it before you pull that trigger. Orlando has been bouncing around a bit in the last few years. He used to be the director of LSA's ODP program. He was fired 2 years ago and immediately started the Louisiana United last year in competition with ODP. I heard it failed badly. Now, he's started up the Texans. I'm not sure where they are going to train.
Not saying he won't succeed. But, it takes a LOT more than a club name and a supportive parent entity to succeed as an alternative club in a smallish market like BR. Where are the coaches coming from?
Also, it's not affiliated with the LSA...so no "league" games. Not sure what that means...but, I'm guessing they will be a tournament program.

LA United was a bit of a disaster. Only had 2 "practices" and one tournament in Houston where the girls teams got smoked for most of the weekend, although I believe one of the younger boys teams did well. Very disorganized, and compared to LA ODP it was light years behind in structure and what you got for your money.
They are applying to be part of something called the Premier Soccer League, which are teams from LA and MS. The LA teams seem to be the ones that aren't in LSA, although it looks like Ascension is doing double duty.
As a BRSC parent, I hope that this is a viable club that at the least will shake some things up at BRSC and get them to reassess how they are ultimately developing players and maximizing talent. I think any kid not on a Black team at BRSC should at least keep an eye on what Orlando is doing. Maybe not jump the first year, because it could wind up crashing and burning, but if he can make it work for a season or 2 it will be interesting to see how it hits the numbers at Burbank.

BRSC is asleep at the wheel and has been for a few years. They absolutely do not push players. They make no phone calls on behalf of the top players. I know brsc had 3 kids at a pdp last year and it was only because they were recommended by other clubs.

That’s what I was thinking. Those kids who don’t make BRSC Black May go over there. But I’d give it two years minimum before making any move to make sure it doesn’t crash and burn. Like you, I have a kid in BRSC and welcome the competition hoping it’ll light a fire under BRSC.

The premier soccer league (PSL) is us club soccer's version of the gulf south premier league (GSPL). The teams in the PSL and GSPL are also members of their state institutions and play league games in their states. These are just a second league teams play in.
La fire, brsc, Mandeville, and CSC are all in the GSPL. Dynamo, jesters, Slidell (and some others) are in PSL.

The PSL may be a good spot for GCT to start.
To play LCSL they would have to meet some sort of qualifications to be eligible to have teams and then start at the bottom I believe.

Louisiana ODP was a joke and he was trying to straighten up some things. Louisiana United didn’t have much of a chance due to Coronavirus cancellations.....so I won’t hold those against him.
Orlando was a women’s Division 1 soccer coach. He has the right vision to try and get Louisiana soccer more exposure. Will be interesting to follow.

Eh, it was not good way before the virus. Little to no contact/info, no real practices, coaches basically meeting their teams the day of the games in Houston, it was rough. If it wasn't for a few dedicated parents half of the teams wouldn't have had uniforms to play in. There may be another tournament end of June, but I'm certainly not betting on it happening
I think Orlando bit off way more than he could handle with United, trying to do everything himself. I'm assuming that with the Texans, there will be a support staff in place to handle the details, leaving him free to work on coaching and development, which should be his strengths.

My son plays in MidSouth and GSPL (NPL) leagues with BRSC. MidSouth is a ‘US Youth Soccer’ league...BRSC came in 3rd...my son’s tean ...hopefully not relegated. GSPL, BRSC first...the rest of the pack...boy’s team technically second.
PSL was meh. They had required tournaments with no competition...that may have just been one bad one though.

Does Orlando know soccer? I assume since he was a college coach he does but his recent history looks shaky as hell. Starting a new club even with backing will be difficult unless he can get some really strong coaches on staff.

He knows soccer and is a good coach. He is not that organized or detail oriented, which was part of his downfall with LSA. ODP was a mess under him.
I hope he does well but it is usually difficult for good coaches to get away from coaching and into a more administrative role as DOC or club president.

BRSC 06 couldn't get over the hump in LCSL...lost out to Shreveport every year. This would have been their year to win the State Cup...but it got cancelled.

Shreveport plays better competition than BRSC...no real way to fix that. Cabosa isn’t the best team in every age bracket...though they may just not compete in our same systems. There are a tons of ways to make ‘regionals’ and ‘nationals’ and even multiple of those. LCSL is like MSA in Mississippi?

quote:To qualify as a state-approved club, you need to have a minimum of 3 teams (at least that's how it was a few years ago, I imagine it's still a rule). It's a way to prevent the pissed off dad from forming a team and taking all the best kids from the age group and spinning off into their own club.

I would need to know:
1) Where are you going to train? Where are you playing games? I know BRSC has burbank and indy on lockdown.
2) Who are your coaches? If the quality of coach is not higher than what's currently at BRSC, I'm not sure how or why anyone would jump.
3) Will I get to see my coaching assignment before I am forced to accept/reject an offer?
4) Will I get to see the list of invites for the team I've been offered for my child before I'm forced to accept? This one is a big one for a new club like this.

A field at Jefferson Baptist is what is for sure from what I read.
Working on another location.

Yikes. One field so far? This could be their biggest issue, nowhere to train or play. They’d be smart to try and get a deal done with BREC to utilize the smaller parks in the system.
