Start screen. It is basically your encyclopedia of beasts. The info you collect is logged there for you to reference. Mainly, it tells you their weaknesses

The combat system is very hard to get used to at first. Even minor skirmishes you'll want to apply certain oils or take certain potions depending on the monster type. When I first started I quit after an hour or so in the game and went back to Dark Souls 3 for a while.
If you just take the time to explore and get into the story and characters it really is quite rewarding.
My one suggestion is don't do what I did and check what different choices cause to have happen before selecting options. Just make choices by gut instinct even if it gives you less than ideal endings or you lose out on items.
