Is uninsured coverage needed with collision?

I have collision on my vehicle that would pay for damages to my car if an uninsured motorist hits me.

My medical insurance would pay bills if I am injured by uninsured motorist.

Sick leave and disability at work would cover any lost time from work.

Is there any reason to pay for uninsured motorist in this situation? My agent says it’s good to have but can’t explain why I need it.

I would not go without it, I am sole breadwinnner for the family,

You are correct with your statements above, but.... health insurance has copays and deductibles , disability insurance has maximums and waiting periods, and neither pay for pain suffering , the extra expenses that can come with disability

Collecting on the monies that your health insurance pays is pretty lucrative.

It depends on the value you place in things like not hurting, having mobility, not being disabled and not having to deal with the shite that accompanies a bad crash because some idiot was distracted. If you value those things then that is the value UM puts back in your life.

You are correct. With UMBI (this goes for the normal UMBI not the economic), you can also sue for pain and suffering. And that’s not covered any where you have listed.

Being a independent agent like myself. Your agent is required to advise you to keep it. I carry UMBI and I am fully insured everywhere, you name it and I have it! But I will always carry, bc it can be beneficial beyond what you have listed.

Hope this helps!

Yes you need UM coverage. Many of our crazy drivers are driving around with minimal coverage or no coverage at all. Don't put yourself at the mercy of what kind of insurance other people have. UM pays you for damages caused by bodily injuries to yourself, something completely different from the other types of coverages you mentioned. Like fire or flood insurance, it does not become important until something bad happens, then you will wish you had it. ...........Edit - Maybe not 100% different - there may be some overlap - but those coverages are no substitute for UM.

I don’t think you need it but lots of people disagree. I haven’t had it in 10 years

Thanks for all the responses. Sounds like I would be risking ability to recover pain and suffering without uninsured motorist

Correct - in a normal scenario, if the other driver is at fault and has insurance you can sue them for what is called general damages (ie, non-economic damages such as pain and suffering, loss of enjoyment of life, mental anguish, etc) plus special/economic damages like medical expenses, lost wages, etc.

In the uninsured motorist scenario, if you do not have personal UM coverage you have no avenue to recover general damages. What if some uninsured POS crushes you and leaves you with severe injuries that require surgery? Sure, your health insurance may pay your medical bills for it, and your auto insurer will pay your vehicle damage, but is that enough for you to be made whole?

Also, most people don’t realize that it is illegal for your auto insurer to raise your rates for making a claim against your UM coverage. So, in the above scenario, you can file a claim (or sue, if required) against your own auto insurer under your UM coverage, and your rates won’t change.

Like someone said above, probably half the drivers on the road have shitty state minimum coverage ($15k limits) or no insurance.

Yeah. You have other folks in the car with you when you are hit by a moron with no insurance and need more coverage for yourself and car occupants

Why would you want to waste your own disability and sick leave when it's not your fault? Additionally, that leave could run out.

For the medical insurance, wouldn't you want the coverage to recoup deductibles for your insurance?

Lots of misinformation in here.

There are different types of Underinsured/Uninsured coverage:

UMPD: Covers your property damage if other driver is uninsured or underinsured. usually no deductible. Must prove other driver was uninsured to use.

Collision: Covers property damage regardless of fault. Usually with a deductible.

UMBI: Covers your medical bills, lost wages and pain and suffering above the at fault party policy or if the at fault party is uninsured.

EOUM: Economic Only UM. Only pays for medical and lost wages (special damages) to the extent the at fault party is underinsured/uninsured.

When I speak of UM, I am talking about the UMBI. That is the one you need, not the other ones.
