The LHSAA only controls when the summer season begins for high schools. Kids can play travel ball and with their high schools during the summer.

There are high school kids who play showcase baseball (travel ball). This is how they get noticed by pro scouts and college coaches. Gone are the days where you get noticed only by playing for your high school team.

The non-travel/elite summer baseball has become crap around here. Most of the better players play travel/elite only which leaves the regular teams with JV and incoming freshmen players. Occasionally the a few elite players will play a few games during the week with the regular teams but they will play positions they aren't accustomed to, or maybe a pitcher who happens to be off the schedule for the next weekend will pitch 3 innings as a work out. For the most part, the games aren't even competitive. The coaches aren't focused on wins, they are just giving kids practice and maybe unofficial tryouts for the next year. It's crappy. I remember the old days when American Legion ruled summer baseball and it was just as competitive as the regular high school season.

Hell HS coaches coach travel ball. It would be pretty hypocritical if HS players couldn’t play.

Summer workouts have nothing to do with summer travel ball. Rule is kids can’t participate in travel and school ball at same time. Summer workouts or not included as they are not playing anything. Just working out

Most kids play both. Many of your more competitive high school teams will play summer ball and travel with next years varsity for the month of June. Kids do their own thing for month of July. Everything pretty much stops in August when football starts.

Bump... Eddie Bonine got disheartened when a school asked him what would be the penalties for starting summer rules on the original date of May 17... saying that that meant there were schools contemplating breaking that rule

We are almost to the point where summer showcases are more important for college / MLB recruiting, than high school baseball. It's only a matter of time for players, especially pitchers, to decide high school ball isn't worth it, to reduce injury risk that would keep them out of the showcases.

This is bad in softball too... especially in smaller towns where the HS coach runs the travel ball program... you had better play in the travel ball program if you want to play for the HS team...

I mean, most schools openly cheat in the LHSAA... so how is this a surprise?

Bonine may come across as a bit of an arse at times, but I don't envy his job.

That job has to be terrible. Dealing with idiots across the board. Bonine is infinitely better than Henderson who was terrible. I question the sanity of anyone willing to take that job knowing half the state is scared of competition and only interested in handing out participation trophies.

From listening to him speak and articles people have written about him, I truly think he has enough of an ego to think he can bring the factions together. I'm sure he could find an "easier" job in another state. That, or he can't be hired anywhere else.

what led up to the split is not unique to Louisiana

yeah, but per capita, it's on a bigger scale here in LA, due to the fact we have the highest percentage of kids in non-public schools.

Most states, the private schools either play in elite prep leagues, or just plain suck.

Is Louisiana a for sure go on June 8? Here in Mississippi we're supposed to start June 1. The MHSAA meets this Thursday to officially outline our plans. I'm hearing anything to a limit of 10-20 at a time, the date being pushed back to after July 4, or no summer workouts at all which would suck.
