Alice in Chains. And it's not even close.

AiC had a better songwriter in Jerry and better overall sound to me. Plus Dirt is an all time classic.

Love Soundgarden. Love Chris Cornell. But the answer is definitely Alice in Chains.

1) Chris Cornell
2) AIC
3) Soundgarden
3b) Audioslave
All four very highly regarded, for reference journey would be about level with Audioslave. Both bands held in extremely high regard by myself

Such a tough question, but I’d have to say Soundgarden, purely because they reached their full potential. AIC should have been worlds superior, but so much potential wasted due to heroin.
Basically, AiC had the higher ceiling but SG actually got closer to theirs.

I was thinking about how talented Chris was vocally and was a decent guitar player..whereas Jerry was a powerful guitar player and decent singer.
But then on top of Jerry's talent, there's Layne. Probably the best (that compliment each other) vocal combo in band music.

Really like them both a lot and there was a time I would’ve immediately said Soundgarden but I think I gotta go with Alice In Chains.

It’s difficult to pick a winner here; these bands are so evenly matched. Dirt and Superunknown are rock solid from beginning to end and easily among the top five albums of the 1990s. I might offer that both bands are far better than Nirvana or Pearl Jam in this listener’s opinion.

No argument there.
Alice In Chains and Soundgarden were a good bit angrier and heavier than Nirvana to my ears, which suited my tastes better at the time.

and I love Soundgarden

Alice in Chains I think actually made better music, but Soundgarden may have been more prolific overall. Both had iconic frontmen, but obviously Layne faded away far too soon while Alice In Chains we’re at their prime. My preference is Alice In Chains
