Why do we allow academic failures to become police officers?

Seems like there should be an IQ test and maybe a personality test to become a law enforcement officer. Otherwise, we let people that aren’t very smart become enforcers of the law. This is why we have so many unnecessary shootings, and routine stops gone wrong. Additionally we have chicken littles that sit in towns like Vidalia or Talliulah and write tickets for going 36 in a 35.

Having a college degree should be required to go into LEO

Cops are just dumb tax collectors. That’s nothing new.

There is. If you score too high you are disqualified.

One of the surest way to tell if someone is feeble minded is if they think having a college degree automatically equals intelligent.

Yes, lets have our LEO riddled with debt coming out of college. Genius.

Will really help with the whole honesty and avoiding bribery and stuff.

I was told in the 80s by someone who'd know, if you scored to high on the civil service exam you likely wouldn't get hired. The reasoning was you'd get bored with the job and leave.

What an asinine proposal. Why stop at LEO? Go ahead and make a college degree a requirement for any job. That would totally produce more qualified candidates for every field, and definitely not just inflate the cost of getting an education so colleges everywhere can put more and more people in their early twenties into debt from student loans backed by the government.

Cops can make over 100k in many areas and have fantastic benefits.

The profession took a huge turn for the worst though following the ramping up of war and hiring many vets. It's become far away filtrate don't with the military mindset.

Know some places vets get a bump over other candidates.

Academic failure isn't necessarily indicative of low IQ or a personality disorder. We let plenty of stupid, highly educated people have powerful positions - take a look at Washington DC.

I'm no LEO bootlicker, but to place the entire onus on the cop is wrong. There is quite often a dumbass or two on the other end of the situation.

Is there any evidence that more/higher/better education correlates with being a more adept and effective police officer?

It’s just in southern states, dude. Travel a bit. LEO positions in Norheastern, Northwestern, and Western states are extremely sought after and competitive. You need a spotless record, great physical fitness, a lot of time military background, and sometimes a college degree just to attend the academy. It’s purely because Louisiana is full of retards, who won’t approve a raise for police officers, yet will wonder why they attract shitty candidates.

Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, and other southern states have the shittiest paid officers; who make about 25-30k a year, whereas officers in Massachusetts make 125-130k with OT.

- Former LEO with a 3.3 BS, and a 3.7 in grad school.
