For my company, it was because residential customers kept ordering jobs and then bailing on us after we had already produced custom materials. We now require a 50% deposit on all residential jobs.

That should be standard for anybody that has to produce custom materials.

Your company sounds like a reputable operation with an actual office to visit. I am more saying I won't pay a contractor up front for small projects and the contractor is just some small operation or one man shop.

shite I just did a kitchen remodel earlier this year and found that every countertop company we got quotes from wanted full payment up front....that floored me but the company I went with told me that they were getting stuck with a bunch of stone that took a long time to sell with a bunch of folks backing out on jobs.
