Why do people keep paying contractors in advance? WHY?!

For my company, it was because residential customers kept ordering jobs and then bailing on us after we had already produced custom materials. We now require a 50% deposit on all residential jobs.

That should be standard for anybody that has to produce custom materials.

Your company sounds like a reputable operation with an actual office to visit. I am more saying I won't pay a contractor up front for small projects and the contractor is just some small operation or one man shop.

shite I just did a kitchen remodel earlier this year and found that every countertop company we got quotes from wanted full payment up front....that floored me but the company I went with told me that they were getting stuck with a bunch of stone that took a long time to sell with a bunch of folks backing out on jobs.
