Hi all,
I got laid off and I don’t start my new job for a couple weeks. I asked for time.
I am not very good but I enjoy playing. I want to go play solo using Golfnow deals.

Do you play solo often?
When I see the openings for 1... do people get mad that they have to play with you?
Do you let people go ahead and you play by yourself?
Figured I can use this time to enjoy the outdoors and play a bit more for cheap weekday pricing.
TIA for any advice.

yes, I love it. Sometimes I just enjoy the peace and quiet, sometimes I'll listen to podcasts or music.

I wouldn't think so. Anyone who gets mad about that is stupid

I usually try to play solo instead of with randoms unless they're crushing cold ones and I'm craving a buzz

All the time. Sometimes I just play real slow so I don’t push any groups. Just chill

much of the time I play solo. I enjoy playing with groups at times but playing solo (especially walking) is peaceful. At a busier course you will probably be paired up, sometimes it turns out to be fun and other times it can be a bummer. Just go out there and enjoy it.

Playing by yourself can be great. Hit an extra shot here and there, work on short game, and clear your mind.

Thanks for all your responses.

I guess I’m more worried about having to play with other people and I’m not good. I don’t want to hold people back. I think I’ll just let them play through if I can.

Also, I don’t always know where my ball goes hahah.

As long as you keep up pace no one is going to care....also people are typically not THAT much better than you.

Yeah I almost always play solo.

I like it because, as other said, I can hit as many balls as I want and listen to what I want.

I will pair up as the round is going sometimes if there is another single or if I am about to tee off and another single asks to join. They all tend to be laid back. Not sure I would really want to join another big group though.

ETA I just noticed who posted.

Thanks! I think I’m going to try playing solo Friday. I’ll bring some beers in case it doesn’t go that well haha

Usually play solo, but have played twice with coworkers over the last few months due to the work interruption and leave I need to burn.

Don't have GolfNow and not familiar with it, but sounds like something I should look into.

Know your etiquettes and if you’re gonna miss, miss fast. That means don’t take 20 minutes getting yardage, switching clubs, lining up, then shank it 50 yards up and do it all over.

This. After a hole or 2 you won’t really care anyway as you will just worry about what you are doing. Sometimes if I get paired up I jokingly make it known that I am just there to get out and don’t have any rigid rules. I tell them if they want to kick a ball out of the rough or hit another it’s no mind to me.

Someone I'm playing with not being good never bothers me. A 25 handicap thinking they're good, throwing clubs and disrespecting the course bothers me a lot more than someone not being good.

As long as you play at a reasonable pace and don't slow down the group too much I wouldn't think you'd bother most people

Golfnow is awesome. You can look for good deals in your area. I usually play the $25-35 specials with cart fees included

Berg- yeah I got laid off and I took a few weeks before i start.. figured I would try to go play a bit since most people aren’t free.

Thanks all! If I’m playing bad and playing with others, I’d pick up my ball to move it along.

No. Just ask a worker at check in who you are playing with or find them at first tee / practice area. No one cares.

Don't do this. People try and do this but they are arseholes. This messes up tee times behind you. If you book a tee time with a group on Golf Now Play with them.

Glad you found a new job!

I spent two hours at the driving range by myself yesterday (local course is "closed" so everything is free, they're still maintaining the course)

Hit terrible shots for an hour and a half. Slice, ground ball, slice, repeat. In that last half hour though I kind of figured something out and was able to consistently get the ball high and far with a 6 iron- though the accuracy was very hit or miss. Hoping to get back today, weather permitting, and see if adjusting my grip can fix the slice. I'm leaving the club face too open at impact.

I played my first round ever last weekend, and said all that to say I'm absolutely playing saturday morning whether my buddies come with me or not. Can't get better sitting at home, and I have a lot of getting better to do

I play by myself a lot. Just remember that you do not have the right of way on a course if you are playing solo. That 4-some ahead of you doesn't have to let you play through if they are keeping up with the group ahead of them. Most of the groups try to be courteous to singles and let you play through. Play your normal shot routine but play ready golf if you are moving through a group.

I play a lot in the evenings solo when very few people are on the course. It's very enjoyable and great practice like others said to hit an extra ball here and there.

I enjoy playing solo, but I'm grumpy and don't like people.

I play solo all the time especially with this covid stuff. No one gets angry when you get paired with them. Say your kind introductions on the first tee box and enjoy the day with some new people.
