Super excited for November to get a copy of this book, I wonder what the US cover art will be.

Edit: I wonder if that is Jasanh and Ivory on the cover

That looks like Shallan to me. Maybe Shallan as her "Brightness Radiant" persona.

That would make sense, plus I forgot the US cover had Jansah on Oathbringer. So maybe the U.K. cover had her as well

Edit: Person seems to big to be Lift. Maybe it was the woman that was with them through Shadesmar in Oathbringer. I know she is a world hopper so perhaps it is, plus I think I remember them saying she had a skinny blade. However it has been a while since I read it.

Azure wouldn't be wearing a havah, so it can't be her.

I haven't been paying attention or am simply shocked Sanderson cranked out another one of these tomes already, but when I got on amazon earlier this week and saw the pre-order was up, I little a surprised little howl.

The man delivers.

Anyone want to recap the major points of oathbringer for me ? I know I should re-read, but no way I have the time to do it with the size of these monsters.

Spoilers:

- Big parshendi things take over some cities. Some big fight at some point - Nephew king dies at some point. They go to that weird stormlight realm at some point. They are in the big central city with the portals. Creating more stormlight fighters to combat the war parshendi.

ETA: I don't think I'm going to read this one yet. Probably will wait for Book 5 to come out and then do a re-read of the first 3 and then read 4 and 5. There is supposed to be sort of a halftime and then a shift for the 2nd half of the series.

This is kind of cool, Sanderson and co commissioned a movie poster type deal of bridge four and some of the original members.

Being honest..

I’d like this series more without Shallan, Adolin, and their awful YA, JK Rowling level romance shite. I dropped Oathbringer because of those two characters.

Keep in mind Sanderson is Mormon. So don't expect GoT levels of "romance."

I’m well aware. I’ve met the man. But it’s still a major step back even from Mistborn, Alloy, and even Warbreaker.

But it doesn’t help that they’re also really shitty characters anyway at quasi-Mary/Gary Stue levels.

Do you just mean that specific romance is a step back or like the overall story?

Alloy is probably my favorite of Sandersons but I think Stormlight is better than the others you mentioned.

SPOILERS

The romance is definitely cringey and over the top but I think that was partially the point for two dramatic teenagers in their first love acting ridiculous. There are points in the story where surrounding characters roll their eyes at them, etc. I don't really care for the romance and it isn't engaging but I feel like it is written more as "these two first love teenagers absurdity" moreso than something you are really supposed to get behind - that was just my take on it.

As far as calling them Mary / Gary Sue level characters, feel like you are going over the top. Both certainly have flaws and weaknesses. Shallan has clear mental issues, split personality, depressive type stuff. Dealing with liking Kaladin while having to reconcile that with him killing her brother.

Adolin is one you have more of a point as he is your typical epic prince style trope and he certainly isn't a very deep character as of yet. But i think the "point" of his character is someone prideful and supremely confident in his position, skills, etc. coming to grips with matters he can't understand - such as his fathers delusions, Shallans split personas, trying to protect his brother, etc.

Agreed she can be annoying

Adolin
Disagree, I think he could have a cool arc over the next two books with the relationship he has with his blade at the end of Oathbringer.

Hopefully now that they are wed the does he love me, does he not stuff stops.

I think the bolded was correct until the end of Oathbringer. Now all those people he thought he must protect and needed him etc are all knights radiant and he is trying to understand how he fits in this world now.

I think this was a brilliant twist on the trope from Sanderson.

Did Adolin end up with the blade from the other cosmere novels or does Zseth still have it

Zseth still has the blade from Warbreaker.

Adolin was able to summon Maya in 7 heartbeats versus the 10 of other blades. Wonder if that means that she will be restored if Adolin eventually says the words.
