You should. He mucked up the story pretty good, but the visuals and cinematography are amazing to this day.

I'd say read the book. Read it afterwards if you don't want to ruin it, but read it. As with the Lynch version, I think a lot of artistic license will have to be taken to translate the book to the movie. There is a lot of inner monologue in the book. A lot of the action takes place only in reference.

I get that, but I will say, IMHO, Lynch is (was?) a fantastic director of other people's material, particularly The Elephant Man and Dune.
I like him. I do get that folks are turned off by the "Lynchian strangeness" that pervades his original works, but Dune was a brilliant (compromised by all the limitations surrounding a feature film) and beautifully flawed adaptation of the material, and with that said:
