So just heard that the weekend we are heading down there is the same weekend as an event called Southern Decadence. So we are going to be in New Orleans for the majority of our 4 days there. Is this event just a part of town or what??? Anyone with details please share!!! Nothing against individuals attending this event we are just going to try and steer clear of it...

That's gay pride week in New Orleans...good luck. It goes on every Labor Day weekend, so there's no getting around it. I would suggest if you want to fit in, you should wear a tight t-shirt and cutoff jeans.

Great idea. Best advice: if you drop something on the ground, don't bend over to pick it up...just keep walking.
Seriously though, the French Quarter is a large area. You should still be able to have a good time. Here is a link to the decadence website

Southern Decadence is a week-long, predominantly gay-male event held in New Orleans, Louisiana and its environs by the gay and lesbian community in early September, climaxing with a parade through the French Quarter on the Sunday before Labor Day.
Most events take place in or around the French Quarter neighborhood of New Orleans, centering especially on the intersection of Bourbon and St. Ann streets.
Crowds range from 100,000 to 300,000 revelers from across the United States. In 2004 there were over 100,000 participants and the positive economic impact on the City of New Orleans was estimated at over $95 million. It is the last national circuit party of the season. Other circuit parties take place in Palm Springs, California, Miami, Florida, and on Fire Island.
Decadence, as it is known by participants, is marked by parades, bead tossing, street parties and dance parties. In these ways it resembles New Orleans Mardi Gras, however unlike Mardi Gras, Southern Decadance is quite adult and sexual in tone, with overt advertising for the liquor that flows freely since all bars can stay open around-the-clock, and usually do to cash in on the huge crowds of tourists and other revelers. It is informally known as "Gay Mardi Gras"[1]. Decadence crowds in the Quarter typically match or exceed the gay Mardi Gras crowds, leading some residents of the French Quarter to leave the city over Labor Day weekend, like some do for Mardi Gras itself, although the influx of visitors to the city as a whole is not so great as for New Orleans Mardi Gras.
For 2008, the theme is Decadence Does Disco. The official colors are silver, black and white

Don't forget to wear your chaps! Just stay away from the quarter and you will be fine. You don't want to be anywhere near Bourbon St.

I just Googled, "Southern Decadence".
I was quite disappointed that it is a "gay" thing, but it will be easy to stay clear of it. If you go to the game in Baton Rouge, you will have no chance of encountering the parade on Bourbon Street and the concert held on the corner of Bourbon and St. Anne.
Reading about the whole thing was entertaining, though. You might be able to enter the "BD" contest if you get to N.O. early enough, though. LOL!!!

This is true. Seriously though, we've been there during that weekend and there's no problems. Don't get me wrong, it's as gay as the day is long, but there are plenty of areas on Bourbon Street where you can go and still have a great time.
My advice...don't go within two blocks of St. Ann's and you'll be fine.

We won't be in NOLA. Ya'll have fun though.

yes, and we shake huge purple dildos instead of pompoms for that game

No, but we do place pink pom-poms in each seat of the visitor section for you to wave during the game.

I was down in the quarter a couple years ago not realizing decadence was going on. I was wondering why their were more shirtless dudes than normal walking around. Somehow I ended up walking with the parade for a block or two. It's not that bad unless you're scared of homos.

Thanks Tiger fans...yeah I was at work today and a buddy emailed me the link, and I just wanted to see what some more local peoples opinion was...Thanks for the quick responses...Will probably try and research some places away from the main part of the celebration, and then ask again later on some recommendations...Thanks and even with that going on i am still looking forward to a great trip...
GO MOUNTAINEERS!!!

It's really not that bad, but if you're uncomfortable around overtly gay people, just stay as close to Canal Street as possible(when in the French Quarter). There are also tons of bars and such Uptown.

Seriously...all the gay activities are centered around St. Ann's. One end of Bourbon Street is for the straight crowd and the other end past St. Ann's is for the gay crowd. It's like that every day of the year...same advice, turn around when you get to St. Ann's. Only for this weekend I would stop a couple of blocks short of St. Ann's...just sayin'.

If you want just stay in the Wherehouse District of NOLA and Uptown. There are a ton of bars in those areas that won't be flaming!

The closer to Canel St. on Burbon you stay the better off you'll be. If you go far enough down Burbon that you get to a bar called Nepoleon's Itch it's too late.

If you get a limp-wristed "Tiger Bait", don't get mad and want to fight. Strike up a conversation with them and you'll get fed all the beer you can drink and sausage you can eat.
