The Saints have agreed to terms to bring back CB P.J. Williams, who finally found his niche as a nickel back over the last two years — and showed even more versatility when they needed him to move to safety because of injuries late last season.

I'm sure some will bitch, but I like it. He's good depth and we should know how to properly use him now. This had to be cheap too.

Agree his play at safety was good. So his versatility + cheap deal is a win win.

This pleases me. Great for our DB depth due to his versatility. PJ also has a tendency to come up with huge plays/turnovers even in games he's getting picked on.

I’m okay with this. Especially with Jenkins coming back as I’d imagine he’d be more prone to injury or missing time than Bell would be.

corner just got shoved way down the list

I’d still like another depth corner. Shon will miss some games.

Not really. They have four corners on the roster — PJ, Lattimore, Jenkins and Robinson.
Robinson was almost cut, PJ is on another 1 year deal and Jenkins may be in the last year of his deal because I’m pretty the contract extension was just a way move money and have empty years. Either way, you still don’t have much there at all besides the XFL guy.
A bandaid isn’t a solution for the Saints at corner, they can still use some stitches.

1 year, 2 mil. Damn good value.
The FO has been great this off-season. The Peat signing was a little puzzling, but they're killing it overall.

Malcolm Jenkins played corner a third of his snaps last season
CGJ almost half his snaps at CB
Williams played both but was better at safety
Only fans care about designated positions. Allen mixes and matches where necessary

Not bad I guess but I was hoping for Kirkpatrick

As long as the saints don’t stick him on an island, he does fine. He’s also the best tackling corner not named CGJ and is stout against the run. Play his arse in the slot and find someone who can help on the edge when we suffer injuries.

Yep. I'm ok with PJ on the outside for a couple of games. We'll be up shite creek if PJ or PRob is our starting outside CB for a decent length of time.
That's the only thing we lack at DB. We, literally, have everything else covered.

Yeah I actually like PJ more than I like PRob. Neither can effectively play outside corner though

The New Orleans Saints and free agent cornerback P.J. Williams agreed to terms on a one-year contract extension Thursday, as first reported by Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football. The team announced the agreement shortly after, and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that it is a fully-guaranteed $2 million deal.
It’s a big get for the Saints, who will add the 26-year-old Williams to a defensive backfield stocked with talent. Williams started eight games last season while sitting out two weeks with a suspension related to an offseason DUI charge. He was on the field for 798 snaps in the regular season, trailing only Eli Apple (932) and Marshon Lattimore (819) in total snaps played.
Where Williams will line up is undetermined. He won the starting slot cornerback job last season over Patrick Robinson, who returned to the Saints for 2020 after agreeing to a pay cut. Safeties C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Malcolm Jenkins should also each compete for opportunities in defending the slot. If Williams doesn’t start right away, he offers extensive experience behind Lattimore and Janoris Jenkins as the next man up should either miss time. While most of his NFL action has been spent in the slot, Williams moved outside for a few games last year and also filled in at safety as injuries ravaged the secondary.
Considering how thin the Saints were previously at cornerback — special teams ace Justin Hardee and XFL pickup Deatrick Nichols were the top backups prior to Williams’ return — this should be seen as a great move. Even if Williams doesn’t play often, the depth chart is in much better shape with him back in the fold. It also decreases the need for another cornerback in the 2020 NFL Draft, though his presence shouldn’t prevent the Saints from selecting a rookie if the value is right. There isn’t a team in the pass-happy NFL with enough defensive backs.

All three of them play nickel. CGJ is definitely not an outside corner, neither is Jenkins. Can Williams fill in there? Absolutely, but it still doesn’t really mitigate the need for a true third corner.
Saints depth chart looks something like this right now
Outside1: Lattimore/PJ
Nickel/4th DB: CGJ/PJ/PRob
Free: Marcus Williams/PJ
Strong: Jenkins/CGJ
Outside2: Ja. Jenkins/Hardee/Nichols
Then you have Gray, who is only on the team for special teams, plus Hampton and Swearinger fighting for that last spot likely. You run into real problems if Lattimore or Jenkins get hurt, and especially if PJ gets hurt considering here’s your primary backup at three positions.
You run a six defensive back package of Lattimore and Ja Jenkins on the outside with CGJ, Malcolm and PJ in some combo in the slots and Marcus back deep. If any of them get hurt, which will happen, then what? Toss PRob out there? Hardee or a guy who’s sole professional experience the last two years is in the AAF and XFL?
That’s a hell of a gamble

Was desperately hoping this would happen and kind of predicted it would.
Brings a lot of versatility to an already versatile secondary. Now have a reliable, if not average, piece that can cover the slot if CGJ gets hurt or can play SS if they’d rather Malcolm Jenkins cover the slot if CGJ went down. Same with Malcolm if he got hurt and they needed CGJ to play SS they can slide PJ to the slot.
This was a much needed signing
