Because "science" doesn't mean facts any more.
There is so much information out there that you can pretty much find a reasonable argument for or against anything.
For every "Scientist A says ABC is fact" there is another "Scientist" that says XYZ is fact.
Having all the information in the world at our fingertips is both a blessing and a curse.
As far as distrusting government, I'm not sure how anyone can ask that question with a straight face.

The goal of science has never been to produce "facts" with 100% certainty. Rather, the goal is to ascertain the likelihood that observations would occur if theories are incorrect.
