UNC got away with it the same way Auburn and Michigan escaped punishment for similar violations. Sankey was the SEC's associate commissioner during this time, and the conference, along with the NCAA, decided to look the other way at Auburn's academic fraud. UNC even used the Auburn and Michigan in their defense, and the NCAA (With Sankey in charge) had no choice but to drop the case when UNC threatened legal action.

I keep saying that LSU should use this same strategy if the NCAA wants to punish the program. Bring up examples of other cheaters who escaped punishment for paying players and throw that in the face of the NCAA. I'm looking at you John Calipari and Kentucky.
