Just an observation of what people are buying. If you think all the people in the stores are simply there for essentials, you're being very ignorant to reality. Even to claim they are just getting some extras since they are there is false. If everyone was following a strict stay home schedule, the stores would not be more packed than normal. Did people not need these same essentials before?
Think what you want, but don't be naive.

For you to make this observation, this implies that you've been out multiple times in the last 10 days. Which is violating your strict stay-home schedule.

Since we're using your anecdotal stories, I'll use mine to answer your question. I'm now predominately at home with my spouse and children. We both work outside the home. A typical week has us getting our own coffees and lunches outside the home. One of our children would also be getting snacks provided by school. We also typically have two to three nights a week where we have an event to go to as a family or for work where meals would be provided. Weekends are similar, March and early April was actually packed with birthday parties each weekend.

On top of that, we're now teaching our kid from home. There's only so many non-toys we have that can be used for enrichment. So we've made a run here and there to add to the items...some which we generally ran out of and needed to purchase.

So if you glace in my cart and see a plethora of snacks, treats, and "non-essentials" you'd make the same assumption as you have for others not in your situation.

You want riots? Because that's how you get riots.

This is essentially what I said happens, but you don't do this every day.

Anyway, I'm done debating with a naive person. I do know for a fact that there's plenty of people still shopping for things as though life is normal. If you want to continue to believe that every last person out there is out there for just essentials plus some extras like in your example, then you're just being illogical. Even if I didn't know this to be true, I would not think it were the case...but I'm curious as to why you think it is? You think everyone is strictly following the stay at home order? Everyone that is out, is out because they truly have to be.... Okay, sure. Good luck to you and your family, stay safe when you have to get out.

What should people be limited to buying as “essentials”? What does “shopping for things as though life is still normal” mean? I’ve been to to the store three times over the past week buying groceries. That includes snacks, drinks, milk, eggs, various meats, all sorts of shite. 5 people staying home consume a frickton more food than usual. Seems you only want people buying what - bread, water, flour and rice?

If they didn't do it this past weekend, I don't see it happening now. The spread is too far gone now.

You're right. I don't shop every day. I often order "non-essentials" via Amazon...which aren't shipping them right now.

And what if life is "normal" for them? They work an essential job and still have "normal" responsibilities?

No. I'm just pointing to your anecdotal situations that don't mean anything. And if someone is shopping at the grocery store, pharmacy, or home improvement store...by rule, they are following the order as you are allowed to shop there. You aren't going to get 100% compliance as you'd like because there are people still functioning "normally" as I noted earlier.
