LSU79. Enjoy your posts, unlike a few of the pr**** on here. I think you got 74 wrong. It was suppose to Billy Broussard's year to start at QB and he was a big, big flop. Trimble was placed at QB by McClendon and had some good moments scrambling the ball, but couldn't throw too well (definitely a handicapp.) I think Hokie G. was TB and a Carlos Carson a great WR (I think he had a game with 6 TD catches to set a LSU record???) Was not a fun year. Problem with Billy B was that he was small, too slow, and couldn't throw and played in Miley's footsteps.

Lester Earl.... it ain't a joke. Just like telling me in the 70's that there would be a kid named J.Russell who was 6'5'' (6'6''?) , 260 and could throw the ball 85 yards, I would have said no way!!! No way!!! Yet we know there was. Same way, these old athletes did things that great ones today will never, never achieve and that young LSU fans can't understand. Some of the ranters mentioned Chad Jones, who is an amazing athlete (and my second favorite player on the team...), a DB stud who can hit the sh** out of people, handle returns (all as a freshman ) and turned down a probable lucrative baseball signing (this year.. how about next year??) to play football. Awesome!!! But this is nothing, nothing compared to Mike MIley. The dude, in his first year at QB, did it all to win LSU's first 9 games in what was suppose to be a down year (he wasn't a part of the offense, he was the leader and conductor), but also became a starting short stop on the Angels (not just a bluechip recruit.). Chad Jones is incredible, but to even compare him to Miley?? No way.

It's different times man.

No player in college these days can start at SS in baseball and QB in football. It's not because they arent talented enough, or that they arent good enough, it is because athletes are becoming more specialized, and the money is much greater.

You can't make a lot of money playing 2 sports these days, which is why most athletes concentrate on 1 by their 2nd or 3rd year in college.

Just because they dont get the chance or dont have the time like Mike Miley did, doesn't mean they arent as good of athletes as he was.

Again, you said this:

quote:

no present-day LSU athlete even comes close to these guys.

I dont want to insult you, but that statement is a joke.

Compare how the 2 guys are as athletes, not the times(70's to today) and the chances that they had to do different feats.

You cant sit here and say that guys like X Carter, Chad Jones, Ben McDonald, Clayton, etc etc arent even close to guys like Miley, or Cannon or Casonova. That's silly.

You are older and obviously biased, but come on, open your eyes a little and give these guys credit.

Again, compare them as straight up athletes. Not their accomplishments in 6 diff sports

Lester the Man... did enjoy your post, but be sweeter to old men like me because I frown on what appears to be disrespectful. Ya get what you give, so be kinder to the aged. Good point about potential and specialization. I do not deny that there are modern day athletes who could have achieved more than these old suckers because they had more natural skills. But the simple fact is they didn't. If only I was heavier, or faster, or had better parents or upbringing (I do have a great wife.. hey...hey.. and I'm a old sucker who never needed to specialize with Viagra..), or had better teammates or a better coach, or had modern equipment or (read carefully) didn't have to play in an era " where things are so specialized there is no way anyone can be a star in two college sports!! What about Bo Jackson.. he's there to prove you wrong (even with an artificial hip... amazing..) and we are talking about the NFL and MLB. Again this my opinion.. I may be wrong, but stupid?? I would be ashamed to call someone that even if it were true and if you would have someone impartially read our rants... the results may surprise you!!

just because I think your opinion is silly doesnt mean i think you are stupid.

I enjoy reading old timers opinions on guys i never saw.

It is just hard to believe that they arent at least in the same category as the guys these days.

To say that they arent in the same league....just is inaccurate.

Tommy Casonova.. the best natural athlete by far. #2 Mike Miley.

Casanova was one of my all time favorites; however, he's not the best.

Jerry Stovall would be at the top.

Stovall was 1st string as a DB and RB. He was also the kicker at LSU.
He finished 2nd in the Heisman Trophy race as a RB.
He was the 2nd pick in the NFL draft by the Cardinals and started as a DB from day one.

IMHO... to be the 'greatest' athlete ever you have to apply your athleticism to the field of play, realize significant athletic achievement and basically become the stuff of legend. 'Measurables' alone are not what makes the greatest athlete of all time, by that measure Ocie Conley may have been the greatest athlete ever to attend LSU, but he is not gonna make anyone's list. MJ was ESPN greatest of the century, but other ballers can jump as high! Sure Chad Jones has better measurables than the Pistol, but I am not ready to put CJ in the pantheon of LSU greatest just yet.

Hitman, not sure but I do know Miley was set, the veer was in, and he left. Broussard was tabbed but Trimble definitely was the star of the first game. I remember the Carlos Carson Game, it was against Rice. I thought it was in 77 but I could be wrong. I also seem to remember the score was 77-0. I do remember the game but through the alcohol haze that existed. In those days when LSU romped the alcohol intake increased. I also remember coming down to earth the second game in '74. A&M came in and pounded us, the score was close but they controlled the game. It was the beginning of their return to a successful program. One other thing, I seem to remember all of the Colorado players shaving their heads for that game...but that could have been the next time we played them in the 70's.

That year turned into a disaster because of Miley's leaving and injuries. Broussard was in car wreck just before the season started and with Miley leaving, Mac was forced to get COT ready and play qb. COT was supposed to play rb.
I agree with Cannon, Casanova and Miley but going back even further you have to throw in Steve Van Buren and Y.A. Tittle, both College and Pro football Hall of Famers and Gaynell Tinsley. Tittle and Tinsley played both ways.
You also have to include the five guys who won the NCAA Outdoor track NC in 1935. All five played fb and a couple played baseball as well.
I'm not old enough to have seen those guys play but their exploits are legendary and any true LSU fan knows about them.
