He will be 3 this summer. Going to get him one to play with. Have not shopped this area, well ever in my life so i was just gone grab the old (snoopy/mickey mouse) pole. But upon looking, they have these new telescoping tangle free ones for kids. Does anyone have experience with these? Gimmick, or great product? Price dont matter, as they are pennies on the dollar. But beings he is still a young, would be nice to save myself a few headaches with tangles if they work as advertised. Thanks...

get him a regular zebco on a 6' rod. Kids cast them better than the snoopy rods.

I started with the regular zebco for mine when he was 3, but this year started him on the mini-zebco and he's much more proficient with his little hands. He's almost 5 now.

Also get bobber stoppers and sliding corks so he can reel it all up to the tip, cast, then bait sinks down to predetermined depth under the float. Dont use braid, not even ultralight braid, stay with very light mono for the bobber stopper rig.

Zebco is the way to go.

Also if your looking to get him interested, look up Backyard Bass and get a couple for around the house. Summer camp had some for the kids and they were always playing with those darn things.

If you are looking to save tangles and headaches, you are in the wrong business.

My son just turned 4 in January and I know this probably doesn't work for everyone but he has two setups. He has a Abu Garcia Black Max on a 6' rod and a Lew's spinning setup.

With the baitcast reel I just turned the breaks up and tightened the tension. He fishes our pond with me weekly and has caught bass with a finesse worm on a shaky head or a finesse jig almost every trip. I did just introduce the spinning reel to him and He loves it because he can cast it further. Started using it with a crankbait this week actually.

He was never a fan of the zebco or others like it that he had becasue they just malfunctioned too often.

I bought my son one last year. It definitely helps stopping him from getting tangled around the rod tip on every cast but can be a pita to restring. The one I bought wasn’t telescopic, just a tube for the string to go down.

Reading this gets me pretty pumped for my little fishing buddy to be around! I have 3 nephews and got them rods. Academy had a combo 5'5 rod with a Shakespeare reel that was a similar style to a Zebco for like $25. They can cast them well. The oldest was throwing it when he was 5.

I started mine out on a basic $20-30 spinning rig from Walmart. Got him a few practice plugs and let him go at it.

Bought a shakespear ugly stick combo the other day at walmart.

Was only $10, 3ft long ice fishing rod.

Caught a few catfish with it on the first trip.
