I have not been in a while and I will let people with more experience make recommendations, but I will say it is one of my all time favorite beaches I have been to. I absolutely loved that place.

Thanks man. It looks cool from the pics I've seen. Seems like a much cooler place to stay than gainesville for the weekend trip.

We were there for one night in January; we took a short road trip and went to Hilton Head, Jekyll, St. Simon, Savannah and Myrtle Beach for one night each. All those places are fairly close together.
It is a small island and you can see it all in about a 1/2 day. It has some walking/biking trails.
We stayed at the Hampton Inn and they had a nice board walk through the tree tops, over the sand dune to the beach. It is a few miles away from where most of the hotels and restaurants are.

View of the beach from the HI board walk.
We ate at Zachry's Riverhouse based on a recommendation of the hotel clerk.

The restaurant and the seafood we had.
[/img]
Driftwood beach is known for the driftwood. I was a little disappointed in this because I had seen pictures that were more interesting than what we saw. But is was a nice walk on the beach to get there; but I think there is a short cut.
[/img]
They have an historical area with some older, probably early 1900's era homes, thats nice. One is the Goodyear house; I think at one time some very rich people would go there and they had some kind of club. There is a Jekyll Island Club resort in the historical area but we did not go there.
[/img]
It is so small that the Episcopal's, Methodist and Catholics all use the same church. The Baptist had their own.
St. Simons Island is only about 20-30 minutes from Jekyll and they have some good restaurants and historical sites if that interest you.

Are you staying on the island?
Just FYI, there is an $8 toll to get on the island, which is good for 24 hours I think. Maybe they will waive that for race participants.

Nice. Thanks guys.
And yes I plan to stay at least one night on the island. Gonna drive most of the way from central louisiana on that Thursday, stay in jekyll island that Friday before race , and then probably in gainesville that Saturday after the football game.
Appreciate the info y'all.

If you'll be there for more than a day, I'd highly recommend going to Cumberland Island. Amazing place. It's the last barrier island in Ga before the state line with Florida.
You have to drive down to St Mary's and take a ferry, but it's a virtually uninhabited island, part of the national park system. There are a few people and one small inn, but other than that, it's all natural.

Be careful, you'll fall in love with the Georgia coast.

My family usually stays on St.Simons but I play golf on Jekyll. 63 hole state owned. The only thing about Jekyll is limited dining.
On a positive note, the beaches are never crowded, you can pretty much have it to yourself.
The Sea turtle center is interesting LINK as well as the Millionaires village, where the Federal Reserve was proposed.

In November 1910, six men – Nelson Aldrich, A. Piatt Andrew, Henry Davison, Arthur Shelton, Frank Vanderlip and Paul Warburg – met at the Jekyll Island Club, off the coast of Georgia, to write a plan to reform the nation’s banking system. The meeting and its purpose were closely guarded secrets, and participants did not admit that the meeting occurred until the 1930s. But the plan written on Jekyll Island laid a foundation for what would eventually be the Federal Reserve System.

There is also Sapalo Island. R.J Reynolds (tobacco) gave it to the state of Georgia. I spent a couple of summers working with the UGA Marine Institute. R.J. Reynolds built a Bavarian village next to his mansion.

I really appreciate all the info guys. Trying to convince the wife to take an extra day off work so we can go for a little longer and explore. Never seen the georgia coast.

My extended family goes every 3-4 years for our summer vacation just to mix things up from the gulf. Driftwood Beach is really cool if you go to the right spot. The food scene is ok but getting better. As somebody stated above, there is a toll bridge to get on the island. I would make sure you had everything you needed for your entire stay, and you don't have to get a multi-day pass.

Heh - we moved from Baton Rouge to Georgia in 2001 and Mrs Tigris ran that half marathon in 2003. We had several running friends from Baton Rouge that came over and did it as well. It was surreal, the second space shuttle disaster was that morning and I drove around the course listening to NPR while the runners had no idea.
I really like Jekyll, nice laid back island with some decent restaurants and nearly empty beautiful beaches. The park on the north tip of the island is probably the prettiest area. It's a good place to do some hikes, and also bring kayaks and do some paddling.
Even better is Cumberland Island, a ways to the south. You need time to do it, though, because it takes a ferry to cross over and it takes reservations and a little while to do it. You really need a dedicated day. It's a gorgeous place with the ruins of a mansion, and wild horses. In the winter it's great to go over and camp for a few nights. You can wake up and have a 10 mile beach to yourself.

Awesome. Did she run the Jekyll island half marathon or the Under the Oaks half marathon? Both are on Jekyll island. I am doing the Under the Oaks one lines up with our schedule. Definitely going for an extra day now after reading through this thread .

If you go to Cumberland Island you have to prepare. We stopped by the ranger's officer in St. Mary Georgia to get information. This is what I remember from that.
In the fall I think the ferry leaves about 9, gets there about 9:45 and leaves ~ 10:15. It returns in the afternoon around 4:00. You can explore on your own or sign up, for a fee, for a tour. I think they drive you.
They do not sell anything on the island. You have to bring water, food, sunscreen, etc. Check out the website, including Cumberland Island Ferry, to get the best info.
These are some of the places we visited in January.
Fort Frederica National Monument on St. Simons Island. There is not much there now but it is on the river.
Kingsley Plantation - it is in Florida
Then take the St Johns River Ferry on Fort George Island to Mayport and stop by:
Timucuan Ecological & Historical Preserve
Those last two places are near Jacksonville.
You don't have enough time to do all that so you will have to pick. Cumberland Island takes a full day. The other places you could drive by on the way to Gainesville but they are a little bit out of your way - or you might go there if the Cumberland Isl trip won't work or you.

[/img] Couple of images of Fort Frederica. It is a prerevolutionary war site.
[/img] Kingsley Plantation on the Fort George River on Ft. George Island.
[/img] Slave quarters on the plantation.
[/img] The road into the plantation site. It is about a mile on an unpaved, but well maintained, road.

The Georgia coast is very beautiful and special since most of it is still undeveloped.

It must have been the Jekyll Island half marathon. I don't recognize the name Under the Oaks at all.
