Uproxx interview

He goes off on pretty much everything.

He says that the thought of playing songs from Sound & Fury every night is painful. Hints that this is his only "big" tour he'll ever do (Assuming he means never pay big arenas again). Says he will never record another album for Electra.

He also blows up on Dave Cobb and Chris Stapleton. Says that Cobb gets all the credit for Metamodern, but that he shouldn't because everything was worked out on the road before they went into the studio. He said he didn't care what High Top Mountain sounded like, so they made a Waylon Jennings album. He says Stapleton is talented and has been kind to him, but that Traveller was "commercial country record disguised as a traditional record."

He apparently also did an interview with a podcast called Trillbillies where said the time that he called out the ACMs for "disrespecting" Haggard a few years back was just marketing - saying what he thought the public wanted to hear. The quote (stolen from Saving Country Music) was "If they're gonna make me be that guy, then I'm just gonna be that guy, because there's money to be made there too."

I’m pretty sure he will start with sound and fury, start to finish and then play 8-10 other songs

sturgill hates listening and playing all of his own music and is bored with it already. I don't see him ever making another "country" record again. I could see him going into the experimental direction coming off of his sound and fury tour. a total bluesy rock and rock stoner rock type record. then he'll get bored with that and do something completely different.

I love everything he's ever done. I love sound and fury, and I get he may be already tired of it....its been done for a loooooooooong time. But I fear he's dancing all over the fine of giving too few fricks.

Here's the arc-

-First, just flat out awesome and talented
-Then everybody figures that out and they get all this attention from fans and publications and more money than they ever thought possible through playing music
-Then, they start to believe the hype about themselves
-Then they start to show that they're actually just talented abrasive assholes, a quality previously hidden because they had to play the game to some extent, which makes the realization more jarring.

Its kinda like Jason Isbell...Loved that dude until about 2 years ago. I dont give a shite about his politics, I don't like him because he has revealed himself to be a condescending a-hole.

Isbell has ALWAYS been an a-hole. He was an a-hole when I first met him over a decade ago and an a-hole when my band opened for him years ago his band is a bunch of sweethearts though. Jason is quirky and really doesn’t give a shite.

He doesn’t say hate, but in the second question he answers, he says he’s completely burnt out on the record and can’t listen to it.

Thanks for the ticket dude! My buddy had a blast, as did I.

I thought that both shows were pretty damn good. Tyler killed it like always, and Sturgill rocked.

My only complaint with sturgill, as someone else mentioned in this thread, is that you can't really make out what he is signing. But his voice still comes through powerfully, and him and his band sounded incredible musically.

How was Sturgill's set? Did he do Sound & Fury beginning to end?

I was there last night. Tyler was awesome and Sturgill was great but there was nothing country about his set.

This is the 4th time I have seen Sturgill and he has never gotten political FWIW. It looked like he was having fun up there to me.

We were in the pit. I think the show would have sucked from the nose bleeds.

I’m surprised that some people thought he was going to break out the old honky tonk sound.

I wasn't surprised, but the pit was pretty empty by the end of the show.

I’m far more excited to see Tyler Childers than Sturgill.

With Evan Felker going off the deep end, Tyler Childers is my current favorite group.

I was at the Asheville show Sat night and couldn't believe the pissed off folks that thought they would see his old material. It was like they didn't play the new album at all before the show. Sturgill was melting rednecks faces, it was hilarious. Tyler was on point as always, excellent show from him!!

I feel like they’ll be canceling shows before I get to see him next weekend.

Austin show will be postponed or cancelled. All events at Frank Erwin are postponed indefinitely, but no new date for Sturgill and Tyler yet. I got a refund this morning. My seats through the verified presale were shitty, hope to buy better ones if I can make the potential new date.

Not surprised. I just hope they schedule the new date at a different venue. Erwin Center is arse.
