Spin off from yo-yo thread.

Would a trap, being a hoop net, slat trap, other, be effective in a lake or pond, or is current a must?

For nets, current actually makes them more challenging in my opinion. Because you're always dealing with trash getting in the nets. And you get a rain and your river jumps up then your nets get destroyed.

Slat traps it doesn't matter as much because they just sit on the bottom. I have found that in current they silt in pretty quick. So I try to set mine on Sandy or gravel bottom rather than silt.

I have found that with slat traps if you will hang them upside down and raise them one foot off the bottom your success will greatly increase. Get a rope and tie a brick or cinder block about a foot from the throat. Drop trap straight down and pull it up a foot til the string gets right on the cinder block Catfish like to feed upwards into the trap

Worked wonders for us in an area we were catching a few each time just setting it on bottom. Started putting it standing up and filled the trap each time
