Visited friends in Chicago and it seems like everyone was either drinking or intimately familiar with this stuff. I had never heard of it. I looked up whether it’s a Midwestern thing but can’t find any regionality in its consumption (other than that it’s big in Argentina).
Have I been under a rock or is this kind of a niche liquor? I tried it but don’t remember much about its taste other than that it was odd...thinking about picking up a small bottle later on and giving it another go.

frick. That.
There are bars in New Orleans that have it but..no freaking thank you. I have heard from everyone how rancid and disgusting it is.
And yes it is really big in Chicago.
Edit: I am dumb...I saw Chicago and thought Marlot

Fernet Branca is the only thing I shoot for the past ~6 months.
It certainly isn't rancid It tastes like a less thick/syrupy Jager. More herbal.
Some people don't like it, but isn't THAT bad. EDIT - I never tried Malort when in Chicago. Was too scared.

Fernet is delicious. Great with coke and lime. Also in one of my favorite cocktails, the Toronto

I love various amaros...but Fernet is not at the top of my list. Averna and Lucano are in my rotation, sipped slowly after a meal.

I'm more of an Underberg fan myself.

Fernet Branca is the most disgusting liquor I’ve tasted in my life.

I drink tons of amaros in cocktails. They have been wildly popular in the cocktail world for over a decade now.
Drinking fernet straight, no thanks, but toss in some ginger beer or even better something more elaborate and I am 100% in.

I drink Fernet Branca all the time. A 2018 combo Argentina dove hunting / Adventures in BA trip did it. They all drink it down there - most common is Fernet Branca / Coke Zero 50/50 mix on rocks... good digestif and very limited hangovers as well. Def my go to if at home or in a bar that has it. The Mente is no bueno. There is also a Fernet produced in Montana, but I did not like it as much.
