1. QB DREW BREES

The season ended in disappointing fashion for the Saints, and Brees played his worst football over the last three weeks of the season. He still finished with a 90.6 overall grade and the lowest percentage of negatively graded throws in the league, both signs that there's more left in the tank for Brees. However, the downfield passing attack struggled, as Brees ranked just 31th in big-time throw percentage and he had seven turnover-worthy plays in his last three games, including the Wild Card loss to the Vikings. The Saints have built a strong roster around Brees dating back to 2017, and it's still likely worth another shot with the Hall of Famer, but like the Patriots, New Orleans must have contingency in mind as Brees heads into his age-41 season.

19. QB TEDDY BRIDGEWATER

After two encouraging seasons to start his career, Bridgewater appeared to be on his way to the Alex Smithian spectrum of game mangers who can take care of the ball and put teams in position to win. A 2016 knee injury robbed Bridgewater of nearly two years of his career, and 2019 was the first time we saw him for an extended period. He filled in admirably for Brees, winning all five starts while grading at 73.0 overall to go with a passer rating of 99.1. Bridgewater got more comfortable every week, attacking down the field and showing signs of his early-career self. At the very least, Bridgewater has put himself back in the conversation for a starting job with the understanding that he's likely going to limit the turnover-worthy plays (2.1% was seventh-lowest in 2019) to go with a low percentage of big-time throws (2.9% ranked 28th), but that skillset could play in a situation with a strong defense and surrounding talent.

61. Vonn Bell

68. Eli Apple

80. David Oyemata

Onyemata had a down year in 2019, but that might end up working out in our favor this off-season. His 2018 season was very good, & he would probably cost a pretty penny if he had 2 very good years in a row. I'd take Onyemata back in a second.

Not sure what to think about Apple. I'd rather Janoris Jenkins than Apple for #2 CB, but we have to restructure Jenkins' contract. His 2020 cap # is way too high. I'd be ok with bringing Apple back, but I wouldn't want to pay him #2 CB money. I'd rather Apple over PJ Williams & PRob though.

Gotta keep Vonn Bell if possible. Great against the run, causes or recovers a fumble like every other game it seems, & has gotten a lot better in pass coverage. He still needs to improve a little in pass coverage, but he's a pretty damn complete Strong Safety. Bell had a good year in 2019, but I actually think his 2018 season was better...besides all of the fumbles caused & recovered obviously. 2 good years during his 3rd & 4th season is a VERY good sign.

CGJ can play Strong Safety as well, but I'd rather CGJ starting in the slot & backing up Bell at Strong Safety. I like CGJ at everything accept covering on the outside.

I think most people expect Bridgewater to be gone if Brees comes back.

I can see Loomis pulling some magic on Jenkins contract by turning some of that money into a bonus that spreads it out over 3-5 years.

I like Apple for depth, but would rather PJ. PJ is the Peat of the secondary. He can play multiple positions in the secondary, and can even be an effective starter, but you would be much better off having him as the main backup (outside, CB, inside CB, FS) than a starter. I think Apple would be terrible covering the slot.

Versatility & run defense are easily PJ's biggest strengths. The problem with him is his subpar pass coverage. He is a good backup slot CB, & he did a solid job at FS when Williams got injured.

I've never seen him in the slot, but I wouldn't be surprised if you were right. The big difference between Apple & PJ is that Apple can be plugged in at outside CB. I wouldn't trust PJ Williams at all at outside CB.

Outside CB - Apple by a mile
Slot CB - PJ by a mile
FS - PJ by a mile
Coverage skills in general - Apple, but he did have a funk after about week 10
Run defense - PJ by a mile
Speed - Apple
Turnovers - Probably about even
Contract cost - PJ will probably be cheaper I'm guessing

I don't mind PJ in certain situations, but I wouldn't want him as our main backup CB on the outside. That's a disaster waiting to happen imo.

It would be nice if we could somehow make this happen
#1 outside - Lattimore
#2 outside - Janoris Jenkins
#3 outside - Apple
#4 outside - PJ

#1 Slot - CGJ...PJ as backup

SS - Vonn Bell...CGJ as backup
FS - Williams...PJ as backup

PRob would be the odd man out. If we can't bring back both Apple & PJ...I think we probably use the draft to replace them.

To be fair...Brees' only legit deep threat was Cook, & he did very well with him. Mike Thomas is a possession WR (short/intermediate routes), & Ginn's age finally caught up with him imo. Tre'Quan hasn't taken the next step either.

I think he would do a lot better with more deep threat options. We need better #2 & #3 options at WR.

Deonte Harris might provide some help here in 2020.

I don't think he can consistently make that deep pass anymore.

They brought Hill in for this play for that reason

I definitely agree that his deep pass isn't what it was 3 years ago. Brees should still be able to throw it 40-45 yards accurately I would think. Maybe 50 at most, but I'm not sure.

I think his days of throwing it further than that are over. He can't really keep a tight spiral on that distance anymore. His ball wobbles too much, & the defense usually catches up b/c of that.

The Panthers lost their last 8 or so games in a row and were phoning it in since mid-november.

OK but the vast majority of ST regulars will also tell you that we have no deep threat receiver to complement Thomas. Brees can't throw to a receiver who isn't there.

I don't think he could follow through on that throw.
