Some black holes are so big that the "star collapses to a black hole and starts gobbling matter" theory of black hole growth doesn't work...the universe hasn't been around long enough. Astrophysicists now think that enormous clouds of hydrogen in the infantile universe may have been able to collapse directly into ginormous black holes, skipping the whole "star" phase.
