Yea I mean it's a different sport.

If you're one of those that get mad that Hughes can't hit for average don't expect Hampton to just jump in and hit 0.300

Exactly. One of the greatest athletes of any sport, Michael Jordan couldn’t get the hang of hitting. He probably could have excelled at almost any sport he tried. Hitting is just something different.

Mo Hampton would have been a first round draft pick if he would not have signed to play football for LSU. It will take him some time to catch up but I think he will be the starting center fielder by the sec tournament.

downvotes are a function of me making other people feel stupid over time. It is what it is at this point.

He started to really put some good at bats together the last few scrimmages by hitting some balls hard, but just right at people. He eventually got one to poke through the infield in the last one on Sunday.

For his sake alone, I wish they would have had a few more scrimmages (although, I'm sure they have been doing some things this week, but just not open to public) to see if that hit would have led to some confidence and open the gates a little.

I think that’s up to him. If he can get caught up with pitching and start hitting consistently then he probably will start. If he can’t hit, then there’s other outfielders who can.

Does anyone remember what Mainieri said about his conversation with Ed regarding Hampton's participation level in football during the spring? Or does anyone know?

I'm curious if it will change some now with the hiring of Pelini and installing a new system. Seems like they would want Hampton around for spring practices so that he stays up to speed for the Fall.

Regarding Hampton, I can't wait to see him run the bases.

Last Sunday when he finally got a base hit he then stole second AND third base on consecutive pitches.

Let’s not forget how this childish “discussion” started. You were shown to be wrong about who was playing CF.

I'm excited that Travinski is getting a serious shot at being the DH. I've said all spring that he just looks really good with a bat in his hands and has had some good swings.

I am a bit nervous though at the thought of either having Cabrera in center in order to put Dugas in right and Doughty at 2nd; or putting Mathis at SS and Doughty at 3rd, to allow for Travinski. I definitely get and agree that gives us our best hitting lineups; but man, defensively all of those combinations have looked a bit rough in the fall and spring.

One thing is for sure, that without Gio or Hampton in center, this will definitely be one of our slowest outfields we have had a in a while.

Agreed. I was there on Sunday and that was awesome to watch. The throws weren't even close to getting him; and they weren't bad throws.

To play both sports, Hampton would be unavailable to baseball for fall practice and would be limited during spring football, which usually ends in mid-April.

So Cabrera played CF once out of what, 12 scrimmages?

Cabrera played center at least twice that I saw this spring. Not to mention, he played it nearly all of fall ball.

As for Toups, I think he ends up more of a reserve utility player; but will likely be one of the first substitutions late in games we are winning, or will get some opportunities in midweek games. Mainieri seems to really like him. And he has looked pretty good when getting his chances; so there is reason for him to like him.

According to scuba’s scrimmage report

First team CF reps by game

Gio: 7
Toups : 1
Hampton : 1
Cabrera 1

Then you'd STILL be firmly wrong...
