TulaneLSU's Top 10 movies about pandemics

Dear Neglected Friends of the Arts Board,
In light of the recent coronavirus scare, I was asked on the OT to present my favorite ten movies on pandemics. Because I rarely visit you here anymore, I thought it a good opportunity to revisit our lengthy and loving relationship. I haven't had time to do actual reviews of the movies. Nonetheless, a list is warranted at such a time as this one. If you would like to include a list or discuss flaws in mine, you are free to do so.
TulaneLSU's Top 10 movies about pandemics:
10. Rise of the Planet of the Apes
9. It Comes at Night
8. I Am Legend
7. Skeleton on Horseback
6. Annihilation (not sure it counts as a virus, but it's close enough)
5. 28 Days Later
4. Contagion
3. 12 Monkeys
2. Outbreak
1. Light of My Life
We never know the hour or when the next pandemic will come. Stay aware and pray always. I would be happy to share with any of you our family's bunker in Mississippi if the time comes.
Vigilantly,
TulaneLSU
P.S. Thanks to my dearest of friends, Kafka, for reminding me of the New Orleans classic, Panic in the Streets. A well made movie, it doesn't fit my criteria. It certainly should be mentioned in this thread, however, and I am grateful to him for his input.

I don’t always read these posts, but I do always upvote them.
ETA: Favorite was the Rocky & Carlo’s post, but it needs a movie board spinoff ranking the Rocky movies.

Outbreak is total 100% garbage. The second the little kid didn't get the cookie it was easy enough to realize the movie would be garbage.
Having it #2 makes the list irrelevant not to mention not having Andromeda Strain also make the list irrelevant.
I guess Strain might not count since they were able to stop the virus from entering the population.

You're going to have to redo this list after the movie about Honkus' escape from Wuhan is released. Hopefully a film studio with a real budget buys the film rights and casts Mark Wahlberg and Lucy Liu. I'd hate to see the story wasted on a Hallmark Channel movie.
ETA: I Am Legend is ranked too low and how is World War Z not on the list at all?

I’ve seen World War Z get some hate on here but I really liked this movie, I’ve watched it multiple times.

Would add Andromeda Strain maybe instead of Rise of the Planet of the Apes or Annihilation. Both are great movies though....

Not really a pandemic but Contracted and it's sequel are creepy movies.

28 Days Later is the standard.
It Comes At Night is awesome in the sense it dives into more of the psychological effects of those living in that world than focusing on the outbreak itself.

I'll allow outbreak films.
If you do zombie films, I'm gonna be all up in the thread and annoying posting like 12 times per page.
People would say things wrong, it would really probably consume my whole day.
Even though you didnt list The Crazies (1973) which following his night of the living dead, george Romero made an underrated film that inspired many outbreak films.

I'm sorry no one wants to hire you as a writer, but you don't have to keep demonstrating why.

Wouldn't the water table in a lot of Mississippi make having a decent bunker difficult?
Now what you want is a bunker in NW Arkansas. The scenery is great during the brief moments you sneak outside to witness the death of humanity and you'll be digging into solid bedrock so all you have to do is make sure you have a very solid bank vault door to enter your hidey hole.
Plus there are exactly three places that will survive the apocalypse.
1. Amusement parks will function just fine as humanity dies but the big ones are down in Florida or California so there will be a powerful stench of dead bodies. Plus alligators eating the dead bodies. Good for clean up, bad for walking the dog.
2. Waffle Houses. As it turns out we have those in NW Arkansas so during the brief times you venture in the hellscape of a dying world you can get your hashbrowns. We have a very nice one on Dickson street so you can enjoy what passes for a college nightlife while the bulk of humanity is dying horribly.
3. Walmart. Not only do we have Walmarts out the wazoo we are Walmart central up there. You know the Walmart home office has a super doomsday bunker to run the company until they have to initiate the repopulate the Earth plan. Yes, a future world descended from Walmart executives isn't ideal but at least you won't pay a lot for things.

Yeah. Agree with you and the other poster. Outbreak sucked arse.
I notice military stuff a lot. Not just the “that would never happen” stuff. But little stuff that the shittiest military advisor in Hollywood could’ve fixed. This movie and Godzilla 98 are full of absolute military nonsense. It’s like they didn’t even have an advisor.

You should be ashamed, Tu. You missed tGOAT, which only happens to be set and filmed in New Orleans:

Friend,
An excellent suggestion, but I kept my criteria strict to viruses, not bacteria, that cause a pandemic. The brilliant 1950 New Orleans film, Panic in the Streets, does not deal with a pandemic and its pathogen is Yersinia pestis, a bacteria, not a virus.
Still, it's an excellent film that shows the early 1950s French Quarter better than any other film. Thanks to your jogging my memory, I asked Uncle about it and he said his neighbor helped make some of the movie's props. It's available at no cost at DailyMotion: LINK The advertisements are really long.
Always,
TulaneLSU

But why?
And a number of those movies in your list don’t specify it it’s a viral or bacterial infection.

10. Rise of the Planet of the Apes - Simian influenza
9. It Comes at Night - Unknown.
8. I Am Legend - Krippin virus
7. Skeleton on Horseback - White Disease. Unknown. Could be a form of bacteria that causes leprosy.
6. Annihilation - Uncertain. Has cancer like characteristics, and cancers related to transmittable disease come from viruses (e.g. EBV, HPV, HIV, HBV, HCV)
5. 28 Days Later - Rage virus
4. Contagion - unnamed virus.
3. 12 Monkeys - unnamed virus. Later named Kala virus.
2. Outbreak - Motaba virus.
1. Light of My Life - unknown. Named "female plague." From what I remember in microbiology viruses, not bacteria, have the theoretical possibility of affecting one sex and not the other.
Although possible that the next pandemic could be bacterial, like the Plague, most epidemiologists and microbiologists agree that it will be a virus, as bacteria are living, thus easy to kill. Are viruses alive? That's a hotly debated question, and the fact that we cannot establish its biology well means we have great trouble killing it when it spreads.

There’s evidence bacteria do as well.
My point was that you included 4 basically unknowns into your list. Also wouldn’t consider Annihilation to be pandemic.
