You know I was watching something about these Doomsday underground stockpiler types recently and I was having a hypothetical thought to myself about who you're willing to let die on the "outside".
Say you've got your immediate family... you're wife and your 2 kids. You're taking them underground with you. But your parents are still alive, your siblings and their spouse/kids are still there. Maybe mom doesn't want to leave Granny behind and granny doesn't want to leave her other children and grandchildren. Where do you draw the line? Because everyone you bring in has loved ones lives they want to save.

When I hear people talking about living long term without power, I generally think they are nut jobs.
That said, if I could make it to our deer camp in north La, I think I could get by for a good little while. We have a spring-fed creek, 2 old campers, propane tanks, a cistern, etc. I also have plenty of guns and ammo, especially .22 rounds.

I thought they were lunatics until I browsed the Q thread.

Its always a good idea to have resources around, but don't spend your life preparing for something that could happen but unlikely will..

I'm taking your chair so I can relax as I scavenge.

The real answer is you stock for yourself and 10 non related females and any non adult kids that are already with you. Down the line you trade off daughters for another guy's to keep the lines from blueing out and secure alliances through blood.

I'll hide the charger so you will have no way to charge it...
I'll use a generator to charge it (in case you would question how I would charge it).

I can see where one might want to hold up with no visitors for a long period of time. Like if this coronavirus goes ballistic.

If the SHTF in your lifetime, you'll be begging, because you can't legislate yourself to the goods of someone else's labor anymore.
Everyone should be prepared for 2-4 weeks without power.

This is the thing about preppers...no matter how much fun you make of them, they'll always win the argument.
Is it insane to buy a railroad car, bury it in the desert, load it with supplies, and wait for shite to hit the fan? Yes, yes it is.
But then they come back with some incredulous scenario where this particular set-up could come in handy and, well, you can't but help sorta kinda agree with their approach.
To me, though, you have to reach a certain, medically-concerning level of paranoia to proactively prepare for events that are often impossible outside of a Hollywood movie set. shite hits the fan, I die, they live? More power to 'em. If shite hits the fan that forcefully, there's no point in living anyway. Storing a bit of water, food, gasoline, etc., for a 1-2 week event, sure, that's reasonable. Buying biohazard suits for your entire family? Yeah, you got psychological issues.

Was listening to this audiobook while driving the last two days. Pretty good so far.
EMP nuke detonated at high altitude. Scary, because it's very plausible.

Being prepared for a month without electricity doesn't make you a doomsday prepper. The preppers take it to another level entirely.
My experience with preppers is typically laced with logical fallacies they seem to wilfully ignore, but they don't bother me.

Having a hurricane kit ready is normal down this way and a rather well thought out one at that with logistical and monetary resources at hand even having a satalite phone could be justified.
In an armageddon type secenero I guess we would have to blow up The causeway and survive on fish and mangos like the homeless do here now...

I wonder how many people in this country could survive for 8 weeks if the shite really hit the fan.
Hell I could survive 8 weeks off what is in my pantry after finishing off the defrosted items, after a lifetime as a country boy who likes to camp this would be a vacation. Last time I looked in the shed there were 4 various liquid fueled stoves and enough gas lanters to light up the world.
Between tending my garden and fishing to avoid boredom I go steal everyones elses shite because the only thing I horded is little brass cylinders with lead tips.
