I don't know how they work really. Do I have to use Alexa, the google thing, an app? What's some good quality ones? Etc. But I know I want to be able to change the light colors in my upstairs room

Hue BR30 bulbs

I don't have any, and they're pretty expensive, but I think that's what you want.

I would kind of rather use a remote control to control the lights but I don't know if that's possible. Or an app. I don't really get Alexa or the google thing so I've avoided using them. I don't get any utility out of the Alexa I do own.

Newer hue bulbs have Bluetooth, but I think functionality is limited if you don't have a hub. Someone mentioned Hue was coming out with a full colored can light soon. Right now they just have white ambiance.

Also, look into Philips Wiz wifi lights. Far cheaper than Hue, but not as good.

Those are just bulbs. The full can light is currently only white ambiance.

Curious why people want multi colored lights inside their house?

We're curious as to why you don't.

Just something as simple as adjusting the color temperature at different times of day can make a big difference.

Or you can go crazy with wild colors for events or whatever. Or you can put them in "night light" mode as a dim red so it doesn't ruin your night vision or hurt your eyes.

Or if you want to go a little further you can integrate them with other devices. Maybe you want them to flash a certain color when someone is at the door. Maybe they can flash another color when your phone rings. Or maybe they slowly dim when it's time for bed.

because people have never had this before so they think its a gimmick like turning the light blue red or green and thats the end of it.

one of the very best parts of HUE IMO is being able to tell alexa to 'turn on concentrate in kitchen' when working on something on the island and every single light goes to 100% brightness and changes temp from soft white to blue white and suddenly its like i'm in my garage workshop with a bunch of florescents at full blast.

and yep, having the lights around the house go purple/gold automatically when LSU is playing ball, turning red when a smoke alarm goes off, blinking all over the house when my kitchen alexa timer is done and i'm in back completely oblivious to the fact i need to take the pizza out of the oven..shite there are so many ways to use these but you have to get outside your head as to what a 'a bunch of dumb colored lights' means.

You're gonna want LIFX bulbs. Brightest and most colorful bulbs available, but comes with a pretty hefty cost (unless you can find a good sale or sellers on eBay)
