Clemson D: 2018 vs 2019 sacks

I firmly Believe your only chance to beat LSU if you can get serious pressure with 3-4 pass rushers.
Clemson lost 5/5 of their best DL to the draft last year including 3 first rounders.
2018 Clemson was #1 in the country in sacks with 54
Their DL alone generates 37.5 sacks which would have been good for 19th in the country
This year?
They are down to 42 sacks through 14 games. Which is 12th in the country. Even more interesting is that their DL is only responsible for 19 of those sacks. Which would be good for 105th in the country all on its own.
Their leading pass rusher is a LB.
Further, when you look at Tackles for Loss you see a similar huge drop in DL play.
Clemson’s DL was responsible for 90.5/136 TFL last year. The overall unit was best in the country. The DL would have been 28th in the country
This year they are down to 49.5/111 TFL. The overall unit is down to 3rd in the county and 25 off their pace from last year. Their DL would be 127th in the country on its own.
So what is my point?
Clemson’s DL is not what it was last year or even close. We all remember Mullen’s sack, but the DL contributed 1/2 sacks and 5 TFL in the championship game.
Clemson will have to dedicate more defenders to passrushing or risk Joe having a lot of time to get the find an open receiver.

That drop-off was against inferior competition, too. The entire ACC took a step back from last year, including Clemson.

Bring that LB. CEH gonna catch quick dumps all day

They’re not the same team as last year. Everyone wants to talk them up but they lost their entire D line to the draft. Last year, they got to QBs with a 4 man rush but they just can’t get it done like that anymore. Their DBs might be better but if they can’t get to Burrow with 4 guys, we’re in great shape!

I brought this up in another thread, but:
They’ll have to send disguised blitzes, and I just don’t think you’re confusing Joe. You may get him for a drive or two, but the entire offense will adjust.
quote:
In 2018 their starting DL (Clelin Ferrell, Dexter Lawrence, Christian Wilkins, Austin Bryant) combined for 56.5 TFL, 55 QB pressures, and 27 sacks.
In 2019 their starting DL (Thomas, Pinckney, Davis, Foster) have combined for 29.4 TFL, 28 QB pressures, and 11 sacks.

I told friends & co workers last year that this group would give Bama hell & would be the reason Clemson would win the 2018 National Championship. It went on deaf ears until Bama got their doors blown off. The fact that those players are no longer on Clemson's roster will be the reason they get their doors blown off by LSU this year

You can only disguise them so much. At some point you need to be close enough to the play to get there.
And Joe is good at seeing that and exploiting ir

No doubt we did not get the pressure on the QB this year compared to last year. Not even close.
Again, BV knows how to get the most out of the personnel he has and plays to their strengths. We did end up second in the country in turnovers forced. He knew we would not get home as often so he went with pressure forcing quick reads into coverages that constantly changed.
Probably wont work with the second coming that is JB, but he will try.

While their numbers from a pure DL standpoint are not as good, you have to give them credit for still generating good results. Just shows how talented Venables really is.
Sure, they’ll have to send blitzes and that’ll give us opportunity to exploit them, but to say that we shouldn’t worry because they aren’t as elite as last year is a mistake.

Doesn't look good for them either way. If they dedicate more personnel to the rush then they open up the secondary to passing threat. If they only rush a limited amount of DL and LB then Burrow will have forever to find open WR or thrash them with his mobility. Either way it looks good for LSU.

I think There is little doubt that Clemson has a good unit.
To me this is more of a matchup issue.
To stop someone like Joe you have to get pressure and drop people into coverage.
Also people can say whatever they want about Auburn stopping Joe, we had 2 drives stall on downs because we were running the ball instead of throwing it.
He didn’t have his best game, but it also wasn’t some revelation like teams think it is.

Not to mention that Auburn created a scheme specifically for our offense that confused them for a bit. But time and time again this season, teams have tried replicating that defensive scheme and we've already figured it out. OU tried some of those concepts that Auburn ran too....we saw how that went.

It just didn’t really stop us from passing the ball.
Yeah Joe had a pick, but realistically the biggest stops in that game were the stop on downs when we ran 2 QB sneaks in a row, and the. Stopping us 3 time running up the guy from the 3, and the.
That’s 5 downs we took the ball out of the hair when we were completing over 75% of our passes and still averaging 7.6 yards a pass.

Last years Clemson D was filthy and the best player didn’t play in Natty.

We all recognized (even before the season started) that the back seven was the strength of this year's D and BV has schemed around that from the get-go. Very astute of you to pick up on that.
One question though - When your QB is flat on his back, does it really make any difference who put him there ??

If you are blitzing Joey Burrow, you have already lost.
How fast are your dudes getting there?
