Kayak Fishing Chalmette Wall / Searching for Specs

Hey y'all, Happy New Year.
First things first, I got a couple new knives for cleaning fish and the wife said she learned what to buy from reading this board. Thank y'all, the knives are awesome and have really saved me some time.
Backstory here is I've become a monster at catching reds in the kayak, my new goal is specs and I am just failing. I've fished Lake Hermitage, Myrtle Grove, Hopedale Lagoon, Geoghegan Canal and can only find one or two at a time. The only time I've had luck with specs was in Mangrove Bay on a bay boat but I don't have access to that anymore plus kayaking is more fun to me.
So my question is first, is it safe to launch out of Bait Inc. or somewhere and go across the Chalmette wall in a kayak? I hear if the tide is strong I won't be able to make it through the Bayou Beinvenue locks.
Second question is, is there anywhere to catch specs that's not the Hopedale rock dam from a Kayak?

My opinion is that you will never be able to overcome the tide flowing through the locks. You could possibly portage over the levee but I don’t know if you can climb over the concrete wall. I fished there yesterday on a falling tide and I couldn’t get through the lock with less than half throttle in my bay boat. I have caught trout on the backside of the “Great Wall” so there is that option. Then you would only need to walk over the levee at the first lock on bayou bienvenue.

Yeah if I go to hopedale I can portage around the damn I think. But pretty sure that is not the case in Chalmette. I thought about guerilla launching at the Michoud canal, but on google earth couldn't really find a good spot.

Guess I'll give it a shot. I'll post here when I do. Thanks y'all!

did it once in my yak. Almost didn't make it back and tide was very slow. Just drive to Shell beach and fish the MRGO rocks down there. We usually catch more on the rocks than the actual wall anyway.

The Wall was slow last week too much pressure and really not a safe place for a yak. There's some bozos out there that might run you over especially on weekends. I've never fished the inside Wall but that could be good.
Have you tried the bayou just to the right as you enter the spoil canal across from Hopedale Marina? It holds specks this time of year. I don't normally go in there and leave it for the yaks and flat boats.
Just before the spoil canal going north up LaLoutre across the road also held specks last year at this time. Call the marina and ask for the owner Pat, he's a straight shooter and will tell you if specks are close by or not.
When we pickup waiting for the truck I idle across from the launch near the shore where the poles are and on my sonar it's full of bait. Might be specks too I'd try from there down to MRGO.

I find those on accident and you right but I really prefer to catch them up north on the dugdemona river.

No I haven't but I have met Pat and yeah he's a great guy. I usually only buy shrimp from him and go to the Hopedale Lagoon because I can guerilla launch for that. I'll call Pat and see what's up.
Thanks!

100% fish that entire area south. The second large pond has big trout this time of year and no pressure from boats due to the shallow water.

Wanted to bump this thread to say thanks for all the advice but also to give sort of a report.
So the first trip was to Shell Beach where I worked the rocks to Douluts Canal. I wasn't catching anything and wasn't seeing anything on the radar until there. I pole anchored to the bank and threw right in the middle of the canal, 10' of line under the cork with a live shrimp. Sat for 10 minutes, nothing going, and then started working on a rig to sink to the bottom. Not paying attention my reel started screaming like I was in jaws, I kind of panicked with all the gear in my lap, grabbed the rod and just watched the line start disappearing.
Thinking I was gonna get spooled, I grabbed the reel to slow the fish down. That was that, the 40# braid leader snapped. After thinking about what could've done that, I'm sure it had to be jack crevaille.
Outside of that, zero trout and two bass.
Waited a week and then yesterday went to Hopedale Marina. Gotta say - they have a PERFECT kayak launch. I'm a permantent customer now. Anyway, I took your advice Mr. Steele and watched my radar coming out of the launch. Fish everywhere.
So my buddy and I anchored to the north shore of the spoil canal and threw across the channel. Together we caught about 20 trout off of live shrimp and a Chartreuse matrix shad off the bottom right there before leaving because boat traffic was too heavy.
That is why I'm bumping this. Trout were a goal of mine just to check it off the list of South Louisiana inshore fishing and I accomplished it. Thank all of y'all for helping with that.
I only have one more kayak trip before I have to hunker down and wait on the arrival of my new baby girl. So, I'm going back to Douluts to try and figure out what those fish were that snapped my line three times. Wish me luck!

You still didn't fish the right spot. Fish here 29.809450, -89.606006

I actually did fish that spot, caught about 12 more but were mostly undersized. Did get a 16" for me and a 15" for my buddy, everything else was around 10-11"
