However, the new estimates allow for a pretty good projection of where things will end up. For the 2nd consecutive decade, Texas (+3 seats) and Florida (+2 seats) look to be the big winners. They were also the only two states to gain more than one seat in 2010. Arizona, Colorado, Montana, North Carolina and Oregon are projected to gain one seat. As the number of districts is fixed, these 10 seats must come from somewhere else. One seat is expected to be lost by each of Alabama, California, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and West Virginia. 33 states will see no change.

If this estimate proves accurate,

It will be the first time California has ever lost a congressional seat.
Montana will regain a 2nd district lost after the 1990 Census
Rhode Island will have a single district for the first time since the original apportionment that preceded the first Census in 1790
Florida will surpass New York in congressional districts, the culmination of a 70-year shift in population
In 1950, New York had 45 districts; Florida had 6

The projected 2024 electoral map is seen below. Had this map been in place in 2016, Donald Trump would have won 309 electoral votes, 3 more than he actually won (excluding faithless electors).

Well the losing states look about split even as for red vs blue but the gainers look to be more red... hopefully

As long as they stay red, and don't turn blue from all the new idiots that moved there from California to escape what they'd help turn California in to.

While this is true, in the long run, population trends do not favor the GOP. Seven states showed a decrease in population and four saw a death rate beat the birth rate. Of them were three of the four whitest states.

Why is Alabama the only Southern state losing a district?

It does take into account the millions of illegal aliens counted in the census. That's why you see a lot of crazy policies to appease those here illegally.

Georgia and NC are gaining population while LA and MS have lost districts over the past 20-30 years. And when you get past a certain point, it is hard to keep losing districts.

I’m less sure what is happening with regards to SC.

Trump's message in trade wars does resonate strongest in the industrial Midwest. To be fair, he could have lost FL or TX (not both) and still won this past election. The GOP must continue to make its in-roads in states like MN, OH, PA, and MI and win them constantly before the state of TX makes the true shift into being purple. At that point, youll only be able to run liberal republicans for nominations and hope to carry states like NH, ME, DE, and OR to compensate differences.

Or we could go to a straight popular vote and stop pretending that states like Iowa matter.

This stuff aggravates the piss out of me. Ohio’s population has increased by likely over 170,000 people from the last census in 2010...and yet we are going to LOSE representation? I can’t wrap my head around that.
