VA school district to allow excused absence for protests

The rule would allow one excused absence per year.

Let's see how selectively they allow this. If a student wanted to participate in the March for Life, would they try to say that wasn't a genuine protest?

I’d allow it if they were forced to write a paper stating the position of the group they’re opposing from their point of view.

Why wouldn't it be?

When have progressives had to be rational?

They will probably have "approved" protests. March for Life wouldn't be an "approved protest".

It’s Fairfax County. Progstains dominate that area. Filled with fed gov workers.

what about protest of abortion clinics?

They would likely be OK with protests of pro-life pregnancy centers.

Wait until the next “Protect Robert E Lee Statue” protest and see how quick they rescind.

To be honest, it's seems to meet that Virginia is suddenly trying to out liberal California.
It's fairly close...

And if the schools are biased, I hope the kids protest it.

I don't see how someone can possibly get to this position based on this decision about protests.
1. It shouldn't take a damn act of congress for this to be allowed. The right to peaceable assembly is granted by the US Constitution. Children should absolutely be granted an excused absence from school if they go to a protest that is something dear to their heart.
2. Any "selective" application of this decision should be deemed unconstitutional and will open up the schools to litigation.
On the 2nd Amendment thing, though? Yeah, the state of Virginia can get fricked over that one. They got this one correct though.

The rule goes into effect on 1/27/20.
March for Life is 1/24/20. Start date obviously was chosen with politics in mind.

Well, that's not at all coincidental, is it?

Then what we need is for someone to go to the protest, go back to school and demand an excused absence. When they don't receive one, take them to court and argue that they deliberately started the rule change for 3 days after the March for Life protest. Demand to have your protest grandfathered in since it's only 3 days prior.

think its a good idea, its just one day not like they learn anything in school as it is.
Also y'all have it all wrong, it wont get messed up trying to stop conservatives it will be the left that messes it up for all. When the freedom from religion group sues to keep people from protest with religious events.

Only if that student protests against what their teachers and school admins protest against.
If a student goes against the programming, then they will probably suspend that student, ifnot expel them.

Very interesting point.
They'd frame it as the school sponsoring a religious activity by allowing the students an excused absence to protest. Hadn't thought about that.

Rights aren’t absolute.
Students’ Fourth Amendment rights are generally nullified (searching lockers and backpacks at will).
First Amendment expression rights are non-existent (wearing Confederate flag gear to school).
Some Texas districts are eliminating the Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination, in order to punish students who don’t “fess up.”

Irrelevant. This is a decision that falls in line with a right granted by the Constitution. My point was I can't fathom how a person can look at this decision and use that to say Virginia is edging out California in the crazy liberal category.
This decision is a good thing, IMO.
