With the rising debt, does a degree even mean anything anymore? I don’t know that it does.

You can come out making 300k without a degree in some instances.

I would say it depends on the degree

I would say a degree isn’t necessary to be successful. Vocation and technical education opportunities in trade schools should be encouraged. A lot of money in plumbing, welding, automotive, etc.

Do you need a degree to do what you plan on doing?

What’s an LSU degree worth? An entry level job? I guess TOPS cuts down on the debt.

Depends. Some degrees are required for positions of increase pay and responsibility, some are required for high paying STEM jobs, some degrees are paid for by the employer, etc. Degrees without realistic goals and plans don’t mean anything.

The amount of “entry level” jobs I’ve seen that also want 1-3 years experience is laughable.

True. I guess you can’t get another degree without the college degree.

Depends not only on the degree but also where you go. That is, a useful degree is mandatory but you're better off going to an in-state school unless you're offered a ton of money in scholarship.

I don't follow pricing anymore but I've heard that Tulane, tuition alone, is like $50,000 a year? That is utterly laughable.

I tend to agree. This coming from someone who has two degrees but a few thing usually stands out. The quality of life, job security, longevity and stressors of the type of job.

Quality of life: If I have a shitty job regardless of income and work balance.

Job security: I have many friends that went into the oilfield or other vocational fields that have made a good living but have the doom of being laid-off etc..

Job stressors: Of course that's all relative but could matter depending what field you go into regardless of the degree path or otherwise.

Depends on the degree. Any sociology type fields, no.

Anything in math or finance, even just business has value but an advanced degree adds significantly more to it .

Seems with how saturated the market is in most fields, you need more than just a four year degree now to land a great job

I would say it’s worth it if the attendee has a direction and degree they’re motivated towards. The national guard, whether it’s Army or Air Force are great in terms of paying your tuition if, again, that person is motivated to sacrifice 6 years of service. It sure beats the hell out of loan debt.

ITT:

A bunch of posters that will suggest trade school or vocational school but would never suggest those options to their kids.

It's problematic in that whether or not to go to college (or an expensive college) is thrust upon as at a relative young age without the benefit of collected wisdom of experiencing life.

If you're the type of person who can see yourself living somewhat 'off-the-grid' and building your own house, hunting, etc., then college is worthless. You're better off with the cash in hand.

If you're someone who wants to live in New York or Los Angeles or some other big to moderately sized city then you're going to need a college degree to make ends meet.

LSU Engineering Degree will have you making 6 figures and won’t cost you that especially with TOPS it is one of the highest rated return on investment colleges and degrees.

A degree in Russian literature, absolutely not.

An engineering, accounting, construction, computer science, pre-med/dent or finance degree, absolutely.

The world needs trades people and that group is shrinking and more lucrative every day.
