Mike Foster, due to a lack of quality competition.

If you go by approval ratings, probably Carroll Campbell.

Greg Abbott: He removed straight ticket voting from ballots.

Carol Campbell ... loved that man. Great man.

The day of his burial I was driving on Hwy 378 between Sumter and Columbia. I get past Hwy 261 right there at Stateburg before the Wateree River and and passed his funeral procession. I guess they were burying him somewhere around Garden City or Pawleys Island and were driving that Hwy 261 route towards Georgetown.

Mike must have been governor after I moved from LA in 1994. For best LA governor, I'd go with David Treen. Competition at that time was also atrocious, featuring Edwin "Striped Sunshine" Edwards, who the feds FINALLY got.
For my home state of Alabama, I'm not sure they ever had even a mediocre one while I lived there. (I graduated from college, and left for the army in 1961. Governors that I remember most were Jim Folsom and George Wallace.
All of these were WAY earlier than the suggested 1960.)

I've gotta go all the way back to George Wallace.
Fire away.
Fire away.

George Wallace. He would have been President in ‘72 if he had not been shot in Laurel Maryland. He carried every county in Florida and was polling very high all across the country.
I remember my dad talking about Wallace being interviewed with some other candidates and the host said something like you think you are the smartest man in the world. Wallace said “No, I’m not the smartest man in the world, I’m not even the smartest man in Alabama but I am the smartest man in this room.”

I was thinking about George Wallace, just because he was such a fierce champion of states’ rights.
