Thinking about making a trip for Memorial day. Any recommendations on campgrounds or RV resorts? Also some nice food and drink spots!

I like to stay just west of Austin and hit the wineries/breweries all over that area. My favorite is hawks shadow winery. Amazing views. If wanting a cabin, tippin T (connected to jester king brewing) is a really awesome place and a good base camp.

Holidays can be a shite show down there. Make reservations early for hotel and to get into the State parks. Yes, the State parks will be packed. Some you just have to get there very early in the AM and wait in a long line....not worth it IMO.

Garner is nice but the best views I’ve found were in Hill Country Natural area outside of Bandera. Can’t go wrong with either. And yes Fredericksburg is the Gatlinburg of the hill country. I like all the random small places further out.

I agree. Boerne (pron. Bernie) is a really great town. But its close to San Antonio so has more traffic and suburban commuters.

For a good history about these Hill Country towns, read about The German Freethinkerswho founded the towns of Fredericksburg, New Braunfels Comfort, Luchenback, Sisterdale and Boerne. You'll notice none of these towns have a church as the central focus of the town square like most other small Texas towns as the Freethinkers were agnostic.

quote:

the Freethinkers, being ardent advocates of democracy and freedom from religion, were fleeing primarily from political and religious tyranny. They came to the United States seeking freedom from dictatorial monarchies and clerics. The Freethinkers refused to accept political absolutism and the authority of a church, religion, or its supposedly inspired scripture. They insisted on the freedom to form religious opinions on the basis of intellectual reasoning powers and not on blind, unquestioned faith

quote:

The Texas Hill Country Freethinkers numbered an estimated 1,000 individuals with close to 250 documented surnames. This group came primarily from the intellectual core of the German states, with many of them being highly respected nobles, philosophers, scientists, physicians, and engineers.

quote:

Education was of paramount importance to these intellectual immigrants. They built schools and libraries which also served for defense against occasional renegade Indian attacks. They educated their children to be independent and self-reliant, and with minds free from prejudice. They strongly encouraged a skeptical outlook on the pronouncement of others in their own study of right and truth. Very important in their education was the development of a spirit which would sustain the courage of their convictions without regard to personal consequences. Girls, as well as boys, were strongly encouraged to pursue their highest potential level of aptitude.

quote:

Duke Paul, brother of the king of the German State of Wuerttemberg, along with Frederick Law Olmsted, one of America's greatest landscape architects and noted travel authors, visited and marveled at a level of culture and sophistication such as not found elsewhere in the entire South. They remarked that their discussions were worthy of "golden goblet" conversations conducted at the most luxurious palaces in Europe. They noted that the crude cabins were stocked with classical books, fine paintings, and musical instruments.

quote:

Nowhere in Olmsted's wide-ranging travels had he found people so free of bigotry and so willing to discuss their ideas and beliefs. Along with the German immigrant-built cities of Fredericksburg and New Braunfels, the Latin Colony communities were the only ones in the South where white agricultural laborers were exclusively found.

Also interested in this.

Wife and I were looking at Charleston or Santa Fe for a trip and we had been briefly to both - so considering somewhere different.

Anywhere in Hill Country give us a walkable downtown, interesting shops, restaurants, etc.?

Fredericksburg buts it's over run with touristas and shops that cater to them.

Boerne, Kerrville, Comfort and Wimberley all have nice little downtown areas. They aren't huge but big enough to spend a couple of hours walking around, having a beer, coffee, lunch etc.

Lost Maples Café in Utopia is a great place.

Blanco has a bourbon distillery, Ben Milam Whiskey Distillery and Tasting Room that is worth the stop.

Luckenbach is close by as well. Cold beer and music.

Thanks. Could we stay there as a home base and just drive to the other places. (And have a good time?)

Is Fredericksburg as bad as Gatlinburg?

I e never been to Gatlinburg but I'm guessing yes. It would be fine to stay there and a lot of people actually like it. There is a huge wine scene there so if you are a wino it may be a good spot for you. Most places are an easy drive from there except the Frio River/ Utopia/ Lost Maples area which is a bit of a haul south. ....but you could do that once if you felt the desire. We usually stay at my brother's ranch just outside of Fredericksburg and drive to a different little town each day. The drives out there are really nice.

Go to the Cowboy Bar in Bandera and OST for breakfast. You won't be disappointed.
