how does that even work? I have read they have sensors in all directions, but malfunction of sensors beside the fact, what if there is a guy is stumbling into the road on the right side and a car is entering the same lane on the left side?

Now I think of it, that would be as bad for a human driver. I guess the best choice would be to try to avoid the stumbling drunk guy more than the incoming automobile.

If I had to guess, the big trucking companies will continue having people in the cab for at least 5-10 years after the technology is available just for liability reasons.

Pretty quickly after they are fully implemented people will be the liability.

Too much money lost by the trucking companies to not push this hard. They will be able to show the crash rate decreases without human drivers too. You may have a freak occurrence happen from time to time, but still dramatically more responsible than a human.

This may eventually work on come loads, but others will need human interaction, like the flatbeds being strapped down, being checked to make sure load hasn't shifted, or pumping off chemicals or fuel on a tanker.

Probably practical for running between hubs for companies like FedEx or UPS. Then turn it over to a human once off the interstates.

This is about the only scenario that I see working in the near future. Established lanes where the system can read the road/lines 100%. I don’t ever see driverless trucks working on the spot market for small carriers because they have to be able to go anywhere to make money, but big companies like Fedex can keep them moving on designated lanes with their own freight.

I don’t think it will be mass scale anytime soon. As I have posted before, trucking, rail, airlines, and shipping are vital to the global economy and governments aren’t going to allow an entire mode of transportation to be vulnerable to cyber attack.

I will probably be dead when/if this ever happens. And I'm not that old.

We already have them in Florida.
