American Danielle Collins, the 51st-ranked player in the WTA, called out Djokovic for having a bloated entourage and being out of touch with the financial security of fellow players, following the 17-time grand slam champion’s comments that he — and others — might not play the US Open because its proposed safety protocol to combat the spread of COVID-19 is too “extreme”

Collins, 26, has never advanced past the second round of the US Open, and has earned over $3.5 million as a pro. Djokovic, the three-time US Open champion, has collected more money on the court than any player in the sport’s history.

“This is a serious contradiction to previous comments about having players … inside the top 100 donate money to players outside of the top 250,” Collins wrote to Djokovic online.

“No one has been able to play sanctioned events or make money since February. Here we have an awesome opportunity with the US Open talking about proceeding forward with the event, with some strict safety precautions to make sure all players feel safe and their health is put first.

“This is a massive opportunity for players to start making money again, and here we have the top player in the world saying only being able to bring one person with (him) will be too difficult be able to bring his entourage.”

They always throw this shite in like you have to be a slam winner for your opinion to matter.

You make a solid point Crack but most casual tennis observers aren’t year round hard core tennis fans like you and Buck. Most folks only pay attention to the 4 Slams. So Grand Slam winners are way more well known recognized. I agree with Collins about spreading some money around to the players ranked 75 and below after this Covid-19 crisis but I’m a socialist. I’ll be mad if Novak and the other top players don’t play in the US Open unless they’re nursing an injury. If they’re healthy they all better be there or else significantly drop in the rankings.

I don't know anything about it, but it looks like it's coming up on Tennis Channel. So, I'll have it on in the background.

There are full fans in attendance. The players are high fiving and hugging and shaking hands with the chair ump.

People online are triggered. I love it though!!

The Tennis Channel isn’t going back and forth between Novak and the Serbian heathens and the Czech amazons in Prague.

Yea EYC no joke I was astonished when I saw nobody wearing masks and no social distancing at all. Did they say anything about a temperature check as the fans came in or did they all get tested? The American media would be screaming if that tournament was here.

The twitter mobs were upset at Nole. I love it.
Absolutely reckless - tennis world in disbelief over shocking scenes.

Love Novak for this! We need athletes to fight to push us forward against the fraud restrictions created by this virus.

Agreed. Some people have explained that part of the reason Nole isn't as loved as Rafa and Fed is because western Europe is respected, but eastern Europe is viewed as trash. Well, it is that eastern Europe renegade attitude that inspired Nole to do this.

He had that attitude when he first came on the scene but then basically neutered himself for marketing purposes. He probably still has it but he hides it well.

I still cannot fathom why the US Open would rather play in August with no fans in New York than at Indian Wells in November with some fans. Plus, the whole player bubble situation in New York.

I think Novak and Rafa are wrong to bitch about only being allowed one team member to travel with them, simply because of how it looks to all the lower-ranked players. However, I think the hotel to tennis center "bubble" is a bit ridiculous, and no fans at a slam is stupid.

I would support those two jointly stating that they will not attend. Hopefully that would change some minds within the USTA.

There are probably a ton of politics with moving to Indian Wells. That is Larry Ellison's property and what is normally an ATP/WTA event. The majors are separate and their own little fiefdoms. The USTA would probably have to beg Larry to use the property and give him a cut of the revenue. Plus, the U.S. Open is insanely valuable to New York, although I'm not sure how much so without fans.

I agree that Novak looks bad whining about the entourage. But, I think some of the proposed limitations like forcing players to stay near the event are dumb.

The U.S. Open - as of now, scheduled to begin in late August - gets about a third of its roughly $400 million in annual revenue from various American and international TV rights deals. About a quarter is from sponsorship deals, some of which would be renegotiated if there were no on-site fans. An additional 35% or so comes from tickets and hospitality, with less than 10% from food and beverage, merchandise, etc. - all of which would vanish without the hundreds of thousands who normally attend.

So they would lose half their revenue, basically.

There's a chance that by November you could see nearly full stadiums.

I know y’all disagree but I don’t wanna hear about Nadal or any other tennis royalty complaining about only being able to bring one person to the US Open because it’s only two weeks. And as far as the money goes I’m in the gutter so I struggle to shed a tear when ultra wealthy people complain about having to help the 75 and below ranked players. If the top players boycott the US Open they should be penalized somehow in the rankings. I’m thinking Rafa is taking the missing out of the 2020 French Open pretty hard. Nadal desperately needed that Slam for his longevity in the Grand Slam arms race between Federer, Nadal, and Novak.

If Roland Garros is really going to be played a week after the U.S. Open, I think it's an easy decision for him where to focus.

Especially knowing that Djokovic and Thiem are going to be the two favorites at the US Open, anyways.

Let those two battle it out in New York. Both of them will likely be out of energy by the later stages of Roland Garros.
