Was hoping we could get him for ‘free’ in this class on academic scholly. He would have to sit out next year to do so. And maybe that was our offer and Clemson said they would let him play next year?

He can be on academic scholarship. If he was a recruited athlete you don't have to count him until he plays in a game. So if he doesn't play at all his first year, he wouldn't count against the 25 initial counter limit (this is different from the 25 signee limit which he wouldn't ever count against.
