Never had to plan anything like this but looking for a private, banquet room or something similar for about 30-40 people, kid friendly.

Most restaurants can handle that. Depends, as others have said, on price, sit down or buffet, alcohol?, etc.
Just off the top of my head:
Sullivans
Ruth’s
Fleming’s
Jubans
Ruffinos
K Street
Cocha
Tsunami
Beausoleui
Mansurs

Side Porch at Mike Anderson's
French Market Bistro has a back room for around 30
Stabs has space they can close off
Beausoleil is good spot too

If you are looking for something casual and kid friendly you may want to check with Acme Oyster House. The have private room. I planned a gathering spur of the moment in Dec about 2-3 weeks out same amount of guest and they were able to accommodate.
