Garage cabinets

Buying a new house in a week or so. Garage has always been something I view as another room and not just a place to park and store shite. I want to add cabinets and storage locker. I found an awesome set by ultimate-mate. Incredible looking finish but it’s made of mdf. Seems a lot of companies are doing that. They seems well made for mdf and have 1 inch thick shelves they claim won’t ever sag. I also found a nice set (but not as visually appealing) made of steel. Good features but not the fit and finish of the mdf ones.
I’m torn. Head says steel ones make more sense but those mdf ones are so nice looking. Any one have experience with mdf based garage storage? What should I do?

Bold claim, indoors in conditioned space maybe. Likely never been tested in unconditioned space in the south. Any unsupported span of MDF will sag over time unless you add some sort of support to delay it (even the 1" MDF/thick cardboard) the temp swings and humidity will ruin them.
For garage cabinets I just wait until Homedepot puts their kitchen cabinets on sale every spring they typically drop 50%. Particle board cabinets with oak facing/doors. A few good coats of paint on the particle board bits will extend their life (even paint the oak, but it hurts to paint oak, so poly/lacquer would be better).

I've got some of the ulti-mate garage cabinets (sku# GA-08-IND) you're talking about. I really like them. They look clean and have held up great for the year I've had them. I have a friend who has had similar ulti-mate cabinets in his garage for well over 5 years. They have also held up really well (this is why I purchased these to begin with).

Yeah I wouldnt do MDF in a garage for support.
Not sure if still on sale, but HD and lowes have 77x24 shelves with wire racks $129/149. You can replace a shelf with a doubled up layer of plywood work a workbench as well. Then get metal storage cabinets

Cabinets are pretty easy to build.

This.
Steel will rust over time too! Install true wood cabinets. Plywood will work fine.

MDF is used because it is stable. Solid wood would move all over the place in a garage. MDF is cheaper as well, so the company is trying to appeal to that market. If the MDF is really 1 inch thick, you will absolutely be fine. I doubt there is a span of over 3 feet without a support. If the MDF has a good coating on it, then it will not absorb the moisture in the air either. Adding some wax or sealant to the exposed ends of the MDF would also be a nice idea.

I bought this NewAge Set in 2015. Very happy. Great fit and finish. And they were running a special that got me an additional tall cabinet at no additional cost.
Now if I’d ever get around to finishing my ceiling and floor, my garage would be complete.
Too many “important “ projects get in the way of my pet project.

I do a lot of welding in my garage so I'd prefer steel cabinets to prevent embers hitting wood and causing problems. I wouldn't rule out the steel cabinets but if they're anything like the steel cabinets I've seen, they're cheap and flimsy metal and not worth the month. Painting steel keeps it from rusting.
