More D Line Thoughts

It seems our D line is made up of guys around 350 (Shelvin, Ika). While that is good for stopping old school run first offense, maybe we need smaller, quicker and more agile tackles in the 290-300 range. Thoughts

Shelvin and Ika both play NT and 350 is a good weight for that position

I would argue that Shelvin and Ika are fine at their size. You want guys who can take on a double team and still affect play at NT in a 3-4.
As for the DTs, you may have a point. Lawrence is a really good player, but I’ve seen him lose the edge to quicker guys so many times this year. A little more athleticism here would probably be a positive going forward as offenses become more and more about finesse and less and less about power running.

It's a part of the scheme for the nose tackles to eat up space. Although I would like to see Shelvin and Ika play lighter. I think they would be every down monsters around 315-330 lbs. Shelvin has the athleticism and quickness of a Glenn Dorsey type imo, he's just carrying too much weight even though he carries it well.

315-330 is way to small for Shelvin to play NT at. If he got down to a solid 340 or 350 lbs he would gain some quickness to go with his power.

We didn’t have a choice really in who we got back then. Our DL recruiting had fallen off and there were a lot of highly rated DTs in the state in 2016 that we couldn’t pass on.
We haven’t gotten the SDE types that can actually rush the passer and have been getting larger, less agile DT types that are 300lbs as seniors.
That’s changing with this recruiting class. Guys like Eric Taylor, Jordan Burch, Ali Gaye, and Jaquelin Roy are going to be much better pass rushers

DA wants the tackles to take up blockers allowing the LBs to make plays. That is his defense.

My big question ... is it "Xs & Os" or "Jimmy's & Joe's?"
Personnel or scheme? Maybe a bit of both.

The incoming freshmen Dlinemen will bring our line back to the 2003-2011 days

Wonder if we have tried a traditional 4 man front this season. I would like to see Shelvin and Fehoko in the middle and Lawrence and Logan at end. Would mean Chaisson is out or he has to lineup at traditional linebacker with Philip/Queen. He could be in there with 1 high safety, but teams would adjust fast.

Quinnen Williams played NT at 295 and he was an absolute monster

3rd and long we rarely have the NT out there.
Shelvin does his job well on passing downs. He bushes the inside of the pocket and makes it hard for QBs to climbs the inside of the box let.
If we got pressure from the edges it would work at least on 1st and 2nd down.

Yeah, but I don't think his defense is for his DLine to just eat blocks with a four man pass rush.

Right. The tackles need to be able to get off blocks to disrupt plays, as well, especially when we rush 4. They have not been able to well this year.

I think we need an actual D Line coach.
Everyone can shite on Aranda and his scheme but our d line just can’t generate a pass rush. It has a lot more to do with a D Line coach that has never coached the position before other than being an assistant. He may be a good recruiter but we need someone to coach them up.
And Yes that does fall on Orgeron as well. I think it’s been more of a depth problem than anything else. Happy to see us getting very good d line recruits. It needs to be the focus every single recruiting cycle.

You make it sound like our whole defensive line is nothing but nose tackles.
Are you familiar with how a 3-4 defense works?

More people who don’t know anything about football schemes.

I think coach o needs to call chris kiffin the dline specialist from the 49ers

More athletisism and physicality is a must. We can't get off of blocks and we still do not set the edge most of the time. We can't help the secondary without a constant pass rush getting home with 3 or 4. Our so called dbu is 10th in the sec. So yes more athletisism and physicality on both sides of the los is a very hi priority.

Then our D line would get pushed around in the old school run game and would not have a lot of success in the SEC.
