On the Atlanta 2-point try that was overturned

Atlanta wide receiver fumbled the ball over the pylon which is the same as fumbling the ball out of the endzone. Isn't that supposed to result in some kind of points for the other team? Not sure of the rule on this.

No it’s a fumble out of the end zone.

On a regular play, it’s a touchback.
On a conversion, it’s just no good.

If they were going for the TD, it would be a touchback to the defense. On 2 pt, it's just a missed attempt

If he had fumbled it out of his own end zone it would be a one point safety.

Why would this scenario (fumbling out of the opponent’s end zone) result in points for the defense? Try to think critically.

fumble out of the end zone is a touchback. no points.

The better question is how did the fricking ref staring at the play within arms reach call it a TD when the fricker clearly threw it at the pylon?

It's supposed to be a .5 point penalty, comes off of the offending team score.
Why do you think the line is so frequently in increments of .5 points? Duh.

The bigger question is how in the hell did the ref call it good when he was looking right at it from 4 ft away!!!! The receiver relinquished control of the ball with BOTH hands before it contacted the pylon!!!! SMH

I believe what your thinking of is the obscure 1 point safety. That would occur if the defense recovers the ball on a conversion and ends up losing ground and being tackled for a safety. In that case it is ruled a 1 point safety.

this is the answer you seek
if it were a regular play... it'd be a turnover... Saints ball at the 20
since it was a 2PC... it's just a failed conversion attempt

Yes
Should have been a 69 second runoff and Saints are awarded 4 points and possession.
Was fricking bullshite

Thank GOD!
This was it. It was driving me crazy that I couldn't remember what it was.
I knew there was some kind of weird unfolding of events that would cause point(s) to be awarded outside of the norm.
Does anyone know if this has ever happened in an NFL game? I want to say it was explained in a game and that's where I remember it from so I'm wondering if it actually happened in that game or if they were maybe just explaining the rules for 2-point conversions. My memory on it is really fuzzy

What happens if the offense trying to make the two-point conversion try somehow, inexplicably, gets driven all the way back to the other side of the field and is tackled in the other end zone? Is that just like any other safety? Two points and a free-kick?

No, no. I'm well aware of the rules for fumbling out of the endzone during regular play, I've been watching football since about 1986. I actually wasn't so sure on a two-point conversion but that wasn't what I was thinking of anyway. I was thinking of the 1-point 2-point conversion where there's a change of possession and then a subsequent safety for what was originally the defending team.
xrockforf140x posted about it. Forever in his debt. It was driving me absolutely nuts that I couldn't remember what it was.
