I drove from St. Louis to Chicago in April. It was like a five hour drive. It made me look at this film differently.

Yeah it probably should have been a longer and more complex route with more back road type of travel required, but you have to remember back in the 80s there were no cell phones, GPS, no online booking, ATMs etc. Just the act of finding a bus station, rental car, gas station, hotel etc was all quite a bit more complicated than it is now.
Obviously it’s over the top but getting from A to B back then could definitely be an adventure.

This is a classic. Love Planes, Trains and Automobiles.

The ending of this movie makes it hard to re-watch. Its a comedy, should have remained a comedy to the end instead of turning sad.

YOURE MESSING WITH THE WRONG GUY!

We need a modern day John Hughes
From 1983-1990, he did Mr. Mom, Vacation, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, European Vacation, Pretty in Pink, Weird Science, Ferris Bueller, Planes, Trains & Automobiles, Uncle Buck, Christmas Vacation, The Great Outdoors, and Home Alone.
Some of those are certainly better than others, but that’s a ridiculous 7 year run.

The movie ends on a beautiful sentimental high note

Incredible, would love to know his process for writing. It was so consistent but never felt stale or repetitive from film to film.

cess for writing.
Step 1: write about family/friends, and their inevitable misunderstandings and forgiving love in suburban Chicago.

you play with your balls a lot.
I do not play with my balls.
Larry bird doesn’t do as much ball handling in a night as you do in an hour.

You know what’d make me happy?
Another couple of balls, and an extra set of fingers?

Making that drive (and just about everything else they have to do in that movie) is a hell of a lot easier now than it was back then.
For example, these days Steve Martin wouldn't have needed his rental agreement paperwork to get a different car from the airport car rental company in the famous "You're fricked" scene. Now the lady would just check his ID and run his credit card through the system before finding a different car for him.

One of my favorite movies of all time. The car rental scene and the driving-the-wrong-way scene are hilarious!

having been adult at the time of the original showing of this movie.... many of the scenes struck a chord with me. yes, the car rental scene - it's embellished quite a bit, but was not far fetched to be taken out to a "spot" with no car and then have to go back to the counter while they tried to figure out what went on and whether or not you can have the k-car.
I tried to get home similarly after a business trip...but I gave up after realizing I wasn't as skilled driving through snow/ice. it wasn't a holiday weekend, but I still wanted to get home.
I quote that movie frequently.

A spin-off of the toys that made us came out recently on netflix called the movies that made us. Watch the Home Alone one. They go into John Hughes.
