For my generation, being contrarian became the coolest thing you could be. The quickest way to get attention was to be seen as some kind of revolutionary outsider. Every aspect of life is opposite day for them:
- use a Mac instead of a PC
- you know, the Beatles actually suck
- birthdays are kinda racist
- everyone loves America, but not me...I hate it!
- capitalism sucks, communism is awesome
They're 1) praised for being a free-thinking individual or 2) shouted at for saying something the majority doesn't like. Either way, they get attention, so they win. Betraying your own country, race, socio-economic status etc. is the ultimate contrarian viewpoint, thus...it's the ultimate "cool" thing to do.
ETA: prior generations (mainly Boomers and the Greatest Generation) were all about assimilation. Being socially accepted was the most important thing in life, so you had to drive the right car, live in the right house, wear the right clothes etc. or people looked at you suspiciously. Go watch the Twilight Zone episode, "The Monsters are Due on Maple Street" - the neighbors all get suspicious of this one guy and he says, "you all know me! I'm just like all of you! Why would you accuse me of being an alien?" Gives insight to the social importance of a normal outward appearance.
For those generations, being able to buy the same shite your neighbors had was a big deal. Thus, the rise of Walmart and other such stores. For my generation, we wanted everything personalized, customized, monogrammed, bespoke, boutique. And the companies that were smart (like Apple) catered to that. So while the idiots in my generation thought they were being super duper unique and counter-culture, they were really just giving their dollar to another slimy businessman.
