Notice he never-
1) Actually says anything complimentary to O, at least not without adding in a qualifier.
2) Actually admits that he was wrong.

He only talks in vague platitudes like what a great time this is to enjoy. That way, whenever anything goes wrong, he'll be able to jump right back on the nega-train and not have anyone be able to directly quote his pretending to temporarily be on board.
