It's a fair consideration (damages) you raised. But there are categories of defamation where the requirement of showing how you were damaged is lessened because the nature of the defamation is such that it is believed to be/assumed inherently damaging.

Shel311 graduated from A&M - damaging only in the sense that homosexuality may be assumed (even if verifiably false you'd need to show actual damage)

Shel311 knowingly builds houses using unsafe materials and lead based paint - Because it pertains to your business/profession, arguably this goes into a different bucket of defamation if untrue
