As a younger person I wish we could make everyone go through basic and do a year of non-combat service when they graduate high school. It should instill some discipline and work ethic. Unfortunately, while this has worked in the past for places like Germany/Prussia and Israel now for example, it won't work here because of the "me-centric" culture.

Yep, you get it Red Sox- discipline is simply out the window today with young people...

...not to mention it would teach them a skill and unemployment would/should go down. You are correct in that it would never work here. Too many would be triggered and offended. The nation as a whole would benefit from it, but it would never fly unfortunately.

I thought about the potential of expanding this beyond military service or even military style. food service with a basic training component + on-base living would be an interesting way to go.
They have to go to work in a restaurant for a shift, then back to base for training, base upkeep, life skills training, etc.
