What does last night’s D performance tell us?

So, look, I work in a field that uses a lot of analytics to make decisions. Outliers and weird one-off scenarios are appropriately weighted to ensure that we don’t over-extrapolate data that’s broadly outside of the norm.
Ole Miss’ offensive style is a nightmare for the DNA of this defense. That said, you’d hope that you can scheme appropriately to mitigate the situation. But I don’t know just how much of an outlier this production is — the defense has not been elite all year.
It’s pretty clear Aranda deserves some blame. How much, I don’t know. But Chaisson has been a disaster as far as not doing his job (edge contain), and others (linebackers, d-line, and Delpit) played poorly as well. Outside of Stingley and CF, the whole unit has severely disappointed.
But given the uniqueness of the OM QB and that system, what does last night imply — in a predictive sense — for the future? I no longer think LSU will curb-stomp TAMU, although I still hope for it. The SECc should be a solid style matchup, which ought to mask some of the inherent stylistic weaknesses of this particular defense.
But beyond that, I wonder what sort of fits OSU or OK will give this team. Rest should help Delpit, but the larger issues remain. It’s wild that at this point in the season I still am not confident about just how good this defensive unit can be.

I think you are right in speaking of outliers, the defense has made improvements since the beginning of the year. This was a CLASSIC hangover/trap game. You could tell our hearts weren’t 100% into it. I expect them to look much better against Arkansas.

Let’s see what they do next year after Rice and before Nicholls State, instead of the week after Alabama.

Nothing.
Last night was a “cupcake” game. And it especially became a cupcake game when LSU went up 31-7.
And like all cupcake games, take nothing from it... Just get the W and move on. The only big question going into last night was “will LSU have a letdown post-Bama?” And the answer was No.
Not saying the coaches and players shouldn’t watch the film and improve, certainly they should, but as to fans we learned nothing new about this LSU team last night that we didn’t already know:
-Exceptional offense and QB
-defense that can be suspect at times
-undefeated overall and ranked #1
-magic number to win division down to 1
-playoff “mulligan” still in pocket
Interesting fact: Bama beat Ole Miss 59-31 in Tuscaloosa this year. Score look familiar?

TLDR it tells us nothing honestly

If the D can hold teams to less points than the offense, then what does it matter. It’s perspective, 21-0 looks better than 58-37.. I don’t really care as long as they win.

Being home the next two games will help. Arkansas will be a nice break, but Jimbo Fisher, for all their issues, could try to take advantage of our defensive issues and catch us off guard again like Ole Miss.

It tells me that Aranda has failed at his job. This game is not an anomaly. The defense has played poorly all season. It seems like a combination of things like lack of depth, bad technique, lack of effort, complacency, and players who are too busy reading their own press clippings. Regardless, Aranda needs to fix it or he needs to go.

It tells us we need better players

Tells us that wishbone offenses from back in the 70s run by Texas and Oklahoma would had given us issues.

It tells us what we thought all season. Our defense is not very good over all as a unit!

LSU will not win a NC with a porous defense like that. I can see LSU getting past Ohio State.......but Clemson will clean LSU's plow.
LSU has two more games to get this problem with the defense fixed.
One more thing......how much is LSU paying Aranda?

More indicators of what we already knew: the defense is bad. It’s been bad all year. 10 games into the season I don’t see that suddenly changing.
We just need to ride this offense for as far as it takes us and remember, regardless of how the rest of the season goes, this has been an incredible year! The future is bright for LSU football!

Damm our fans wanted more offense ,now we have it. If you don’t think scoring so fast doesn’t hurt defense you are delusional. It gives other teams more possessions . Defense less time on sidelines to rest and make adjustments. Plus Dave has seen a full year to make adjustments now that he has seen the timeline in between possessions. Coaches will also know how to better condition players. And

Joe Burrow better not get hurt.

Our young backups need to step up and fill the holes.

Stingley did not get burnt last night.

Gap integrity, tackling angles in the back 7 and a lack of disruption and push at Dline have been problems all year. It had gotten better until last night when it was apparent we were having a hangover game.
That said, I’m not a big fan of the 3-4 against modern offenses. You have to be able to recruit guys who want to play in it and it is hard to find big, disruptive 2- gap Dlinemen. It puts a lot of pressure on linebackers and safeties to make the play 100% of the time and it tends to have problems with pass rush.
If your linebackers and safeties have gap and tackling problems like ours do you can forget having an elite defense because our Dlinemen are not the ones making the play.
