They get around it in a variety of ways. Have a good buddy that played basketball at Princeton. He had teammates who had good, but not elite, grades in high school but got "minority academic opportunity" scholarships and shite like that to go play basketball there.

Not sure if NCAA schools can do this, but the NAIA school I attended my first two years out of high school had all the basketball players on some form of academic scholarship. Most everyone had 30+ ACTs though.

The cancellation of the Penn volleyball season comes after a tumultuous year for the program in which several veteran players quit the team and eight players filed formal grievances against coach Iain Braddak citing a team-wide decline in mental health.

quote:

Despite the concerns raised both by members of the team and alumni, Penn Athletics stood by Braddak throughout the conflict resolution process and through this season. Last spring, a large number of women on the team told The Daily Pennsylvanian that they had become frustrated with the lack of transparency of Penn Athletics and a broader lack of action.

Penn Athletics' announcement does not mention or refer to Braddak, the third Penn volleyball coach in as many years when he was hired in 2018.

Looks like there are a bunch of problems in that athletic program

Form what I understand, they certainly recruit athletes and allow lower GPAs and SAT scores.

They don’t give any actual monetary aid based on athletic ability. However everyone whose family makes under 125K (and for some schools, 150K), gets a full need-based tuition waiver which is pretty damn similar.

I suppose the athletes take out loans for books, flights home and things like that, if their parents can’t help with contributions, but that’s pennies compared to the cost of attendance.

I would assume volleyball is not a sport where you have many kids with families making less than that

Officially, they do not give athletic schollys, nor do they do academic ones. The only support is need-based. When I was at Columbia, we definitely had some athletes on support - but I think it was under-represented minority opportunity support.
